When Kaulig Racing signed Josh Williams from DGM Racing before the start of the new season, fans thought that things would be different for the 30-year-old. But so far into the season with his new team, not much has really changed. Last year, Williams struggled in the first few races and history is repeating itself in 2024. The driver of the #11 car probably has this in the back of his head as he was completely dejected after a poor performance at the Circuit of the Americas.

Kaulig Racing star dejected after exhausting COTA weekend

He faced a lot of issues in last weekend’s race which he could not even finish and scored just one point. The 30-year-old was replaced by Daniel Hemric in qualifying since he was on ‘baby watch’ as per a report by Speedway Digest. Hemric qualified P9 but when Josh Williams came back for the race, he had to start from the back of the pack. His race was not without incident as well, since he was given a penalty for cutting a corner. And then, his engine overheated and the car had to be retired.

So yeah, not a great day for one of Kaulig Racing’s newest recruits and he was not having a good time in Austin at all. “I’m not even sure what to say anymore. I’m not sure what we need to do for our luck to turn around, but I’m glad we’ve got a couple of short tracks coming up next,” the driver of the #11 said.

Most motorsports fans would agree that racing on short tracks is perhaps the most difficult skill for a NASCAR driver to learn, after road course racing. For a man who has only finished the top 25 once so far this season, is it really such a good thing?

Turns out that is not the case. The next two races on the NASCAR Xfinity Series calendar will be held at Richmond and Martinsville respectively and Josh Williams does not have the best results in either of them. According to Driver Averages, the 30-year-old driver has taken part in 6 Xfinity Series races in Richmond, never finished in the top 20, and has an average finish of more than 25. One may suggest that the car was not competitive but the number of races seems like a lot.

And then there’s Martinsville, one of the toughest tracks to navigate where even the most experienced of racers sometimes struggle. Surprisingly, Williams has a decent record at the iconic short track. Six starts again, just like Richmond but with an average finish of 16.8. That’s probably because he finished 5 out of those 6 races in the top 15. But it still is not convincing enough to suggest that he can turn his season around at any of those tracks.
