From the sidelines, Josh Berry has watched other drivers live his dream of racing full-time in NASCAR’s Cup Series. Racing the Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, Berry has had the chance to partake in the Cup Series, albeit as a relief driver of Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman. Now, his long-standing wish is fulfilled, and Berry has finally hitched a ride with Stewart-Haas Racing for the 2024 Cup Series season, replacing Kevin Harvick in the #4 Ford Mustang.
Back from attending meetings regarding his signing, Josh Berry joined his current boss, Dale Earnhardt Jr, on The Dale Jr. Download podcast. Discussing his time at JR Motorsports, Josh Berry further revealed how he can rely on three Hall of Famers in his Cup Series journey.

Josh Berry’s dabble in the Cup Series as a relief driver served as his audition for SHR. Tony Stewart recruited Berry, feeling he has earned his spot in the Cup Series, unlike younger drivers who typically buy their way in. Departing from the norm of young drivers as rookies, Berry will be 33 when he starts his Cup Series journey. Although Josh Berry has collected his fair share of accolades as an Xfinity Series driver for JR Motorsports, filling in Kevin Harvick’s shoes is a daunting task. Yet somehow the “relief driver” seemed relieved.
Not fearing living up to the expectations of filling Kevin Harvick’s spot as SHR’s #4 driver, Josh Berry revealed the reason behind his confidence. Speaking to Junior on The Dale Jr. Download podcast, Berry said, “I know that even now I have gone through a few things. When it comes to the driving side of things and Cup Racing, I have three Hall of Famers that I am gonna be able to lean on.”
Revealing the names of the three Hall of Famers he can bank on, Berry said, “I’mma have you [Dale Jr], I’mma have Kevin Harvick, and I’mma have Tony Stewart that I can lean on whenever I have questions about anything, my day to day life, my routine, what I need to do, what I need to prioritize.”
When asked by Dale Jr regarding how he handled the affairs of the signing, Josh Berry credited Kelley Earnhardt Miller for helping him out.

Kelley Earnhardt has been closely working with the racing and management team, executing her role as JR Motorsports Chief Executive Officer and co-owner. Often referred to as the backbone of JR Motorsports, Dale Jr’s sister has stayed true to her name. With Josh Berry ready to depart on his new venture, Kelley has made sure Berry had all the help he needed to make a smooth transition.
“I have reached out to Kelly throughout this process several times and asked her questions about this [signing with SHR] and what she thought, and utilized her to help. I don’t feel like I’m doing it all myself,” said Josh Berry, revealing to Junior how he never felt like he was making the transition alone.
