When NASCAR announced that they would be bringing back stage cautions to road courses, Joey Logano was thrilled. In an interview with SiriusXM, the defending Cup Series champion said that he was not a fan when the stage cautions were excluded from road courses. However, not everyone is in agreement with his opinion, including one of the biggest underdogs in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023.
Earlier this season, NASCAR announced that the road course stage cautions would begin on October 8 at the Charlotte Roval. While that track is not entirely a road course, it would certainly be interesting to see how the race plays out. One thing that the stage cautions will guarantee is opportunity. A lot of the drivers who might not have competitive cars will have opportunities to challenge in places high up the pack, and of course, there will be an entertainment factor for the fans.

Joey Logano Agrees to Disagree With Playoff Underdog
Obviously, that entertainment factor is the main attraction for fans who have been disappointed with how the road course races turned out this season. The races at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen were called snooze-fests by a number of fans.
According to Joey Logano, the road course races, which were usually devoid of any caution, at least at Indy and Watkins Glen this year, were like “an F1 race. Just meh. Just not good enough.” The 2022 Cup Series winner also believes that it will give teams a chance to strategize and challenge for the race to win regardless of where they are when the caution falls.
However, Front Row Motorsports driver Michael McDowell, who will return to pilot the No. 34 car for the 2024 season, is not quite sure if that is what fans want from NASCAR’s road course races. Commenting his opinion under Logano’s SiriusXM video, he wrote, “Entertainment is subjective so I am good if the fans want it but is that what the fans really want?”
There have been a number of fans who echoed McDowell’s sentiment, stating that the whole stage cautions aspect was like a gimmick that was not necessary in road courses.
Some like it because it gives them an opportunity to make something happen on a restart, like stuffing it 5 wide, bumper car style. It also erases the time gap lost on track due to the lack of actual speed. It gives the guys who can’t run up front all day a shot at it. Indoor…

Logano was given the chance to react to his fellow driver’s comments ahead of the final round of 16 race at Bristol. After learning what the 2023 Indianapolis winner said, Logano simply said that it was a matter of different opinions.
“We’re entitled to our opinion. He can think what he wants, that’s okay, I’m not saying he’s wrong. I don’t think I’m wrong either. It’s kind of an opinion. You can’t make everyone happy. I think we’ve learned that at this point,” he said.

Logano will go into the Bristol race 12 points above the cutline in 11th place. He will be under a bit of pressure but in all probability, he will make it through to the round of 12. He would still like to have a good result, but his qualifying effort certainly did him no favors.

Kansas Déjà Vu Could Help Logano in Bristol
The 2022 Cup Series champion was only the 28th fastest at the end of qualifying and will start the race from way back on the grid. It will take a monumental effort for him to come back and finish somewhere in or near the top five.
But one advantage that he will have is the fact that the race will take place at Bristol, a track where cautions and restarts are not uncommon at all. And if anyone is good at restarts, it is the #22 driver.
Last weekend at Kansas, Logano was running in 16th place when the final caution fell. The Team Penske man came into the pits for two tires and not four. As the race restarted with just two laps to go, there was a period of time when Logano led the race before dropping back and finishing in fifth place.

While he didn’t win, a jump from 16th to fifth in the space of one caution is incredible and the Team Penske man will be hoping for more of the same at Bristol.
