Decisions by NASCAR have often been the center of discussion. Speculations have been floating around chances of a return to the long-forgotten track of Montreal. Multiple reports have confirmed that NASCAR is now in negotiations to bring the racing series back to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

These decisions come as a result of NASCAR’s ambitions to increase its reach globally. Although the decision has not gone particularly well with everyone, the talks have been ongoing for some time now. Team Penske driver and two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano has taken a cue from the continuous news on this issue. Justifying his standpoint, he reasoned his stance.

It’s asking a lot: Joey Logano brings fans’ problems to the fore

Addressing the issue on the highly followed Channel 90 SiriusXM radio podcast, Joey Logano talked from the perspective of a common follower of the sport. Logano also emphasized the importance of decentralizing the number of races. Giving out each track their own unique preparation was one of the key points from his dialogue.

“Well, I think a couple of things. I think, for one, no racetrack should have more than one race. I think that because we have seen that spreading out the love is good for the sport. We’ve proven that so many times here recently. With Road America, oh my goodness, the place was packed, right?

“And I always say this all the time, it is asking a lot for fans to travel a long ways away to watch a race. If you gotta travel 3-4 hours to go to race and there’s hotel room, all of a sudden it’s expensive really. And the race tickets and other stuff ticks along with it. It’s asking a lot. If it’s in your backyard, you can just drive there. You know an hour and a half and come back home.”

Logano’s comments take an average fan’s needs and problems quite considerably here. At the same time, the 2018 and 2022 Cup champion was all praise for the World Wide Technology Raceway. He said, “Gateway, not being what, 10 minutes from the city in Downtown? Like that’s pretty good. There’s a lot of people there, who have probably never seen a race before. If you don’t like racing, well, there’s a heck of a concert afterward. You can go there for either one, and it makes everybody happy.”

The proceedings in Montreal will be of strategic importance to NASCAR since Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has an important role in the history of motorsport.

The procedure to initiate a return to Montreal has been ongoing for a long time. To modernize the site, the city has invested $60 million in substantial upgrades in 2018, demonstrating its support for motorsport events. NASCAR President Steve Phelps has been quite optimistic and ambitious about the project. Assuring the fans, he said, “Our 2024 schedule will probably be the most aggressive we’ve ever had in terms of continued variation.” The track is preparing to host Formula One the next weekend as well.

Fans have poured in their support for Joey Logano’s description of the situation on social media. One fan tweeted about an interesting idea to get the final race in rotation, and in secret, every season to shuffle things up a little bit. “I agree, and the final race should rotate around as well to reflect all the different tracks every year and should not be released until the end of the season.”

Many other fans agreed with Logano’s argument that tracks should not host more than one race per season.

Some fans have been massively critical of NASCAR’s approach in expanding the races. A fan said, “I partially agree. Only Charlotte, Daytona, Talladega, Martinsville, Darlington, and Bristol deserve two dates due to the historical significance, fan relationship, and on track product (granted since Gen 7, the short track package needs to be adjusted).” Another fan highlighted a critical observation about which races to be held in the playoffs.

Its unusual location on the man-made Notre Dame Island in the St. Lawrence River makes it even more special. As an attractive option to garner fans, NASCAR is prepared to explore the opportunities. They are not looking to limit themselves to North America as reports from Sports Business Journal suggest. Middle East has been a lucrative option, according to latest rumors.
