When NASCAR announced early in the year that it would eliminate stage breaks at road course races in the 2023 season, the decision received extreme feedback from the racing community. With one group in clear criticism of it, others wanted to see the newer perspective that the format would bring. The season’s schedule featured 6 road courses, and these were 6 opportunities to test the credibility of NASCAR’s idea. With a lot of drivers on the grid not knowing anything but stage racing in their careers, the move was always going to be an uphill climb.

And once the season began, the critical feedback from drivers began pouring in. Unimpressed with the longer time they ran and the heat their bodies acclimated because of it, a lot voiced their stressful time behind the wheel. Months later, 5 of those 6 opportunities have proven enough and NASCAR has decided to bring back stage-break cautions for the 6th road course race at the Charlotte Roval on the 8th of October. One person who is overjoyed with the revert is the former champion, Joey Logano.

On Tuesday, the racing promotion announced that it would forgo its decision to remove stage breaks at road courses. The main reason behind this reversal is the longer-than-expected green flags that fans saw at the courses this year. This particularly included the Watkins Glen and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The goal for NASCAR had always been to bring more action and entertainment into the races. Unfortunately, the decision backfired, nullifying the possibility of any positive results for them. In the wake of this, it is understandable that they would step back.

Appearing on SiriusXM’s NASCAR radio, Team Penske driver Joey Logano expressed his happiness with the return of stage cautions. Comparing how the recent road course races had become like F1 racing, he said, “Just, meh! Like it is not good enough. And, like shoot some cautions in the dang thing. Reset and rerack and let’s go again. Like right now, the way it was you have on the stake. On pit road, or as a race car driver, there’s zero chance of recovery. Zero, without a caution.”

Joey Logano’s best result in the current road course format came in Sonoma where he finished at P3. His worst was at the Brickyard where he finished P34.

One of the issues that a lot of fans had with stage break cautions in the first place was the opinion that the cautions made things too unfair. Having drivers restart at intervals effectively took away whatever advantage the faster cars on the grid had secured and put things on scale again. Moreover, the consensus was that the stage break cautions were too artificial and hindered the natural course of the race. While Logano had voiced thoughts that were slightly in the understanding of these sentiments early in the year, he’d quickly changed pace and favored the breaks since his race at the Circuit of The Americas where he finished P28.

Continuing on SiriusXM, he said, “If we all know the caution is going to be there, it is not manufactured. It is not like, ‘Oh, it is a gimmick race’. No! That’s not the case at all. We know it is gonna be there, we can race around that. (…) We know what lap they’re gonna be on. We know what kind of points are scored. And it re-racks until where you have cars all close together again and there’s just a lot more storylines and a lot more to talk about.”

Finally, declaring that favoring stage break cautions was a no-brainer for him, the former champion expressed that he was really glad that NASCAR put it back. While the decision coming in the midst of the playoffs instead of the offseason is seen as something out of the ordinary from the promotion, fans will be happy that they won’t be bored with another un-eventful race.
