How do you replace a driver like Martin Truex Jr? The 43-year-old has a resume worthy of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. And hence, when Truex Jr announced his long-expected retirement in a press conference at Iowa Speedway, it still sent shockwaves. Amidst all the Silly Season drama, the speculation about who will fill his seat at Joe Gibbs Racing has reached an all-time high and people have already picked their favorites.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe is a popular pick for many, but Dale Earnhardt Jr has mixed feelings about Briscoe potentially joining Joe Gibbs Racing.

Is Chase Briscoe a risk worth taking for Joe Gibbs Racing?

Chase Briscoe will be out of a team soon, as Stewart-Haas Racing is shutting down operations at the end of the season. However, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year has been Stewart-Haas Racing’s most consistent racer this season with five top-10 finishes and one top-5 finish. Currently 17th, Briscoe is sitting below the NASCAR Cup Series playoff cutoff with 370 points, 44 points behind Bubba Wallace at 16th.

Speaking about Briscoe being a possible replacement for Martin Truex Jr, Dale Earnhardt Jr said on his DJD podcast, “I’m not sure. Chase Briscoe, I think is a really good racecar driver, and more often than not since (Kevin) Harvick‘s peak, Chase has kind of been the car that runs the best and has the best position in points. So he’s the more consistent producer at Stewart-Haas Racing. I think this is gonna work out, but I think there’s a level of risk, as well, for Joe Gibbs Racing.”

The likelihood of Chase Briscoe keeping a seat in the NASCAR Cup Series next year is very high, especially because of the sponsorship revenue he can bring to a team. Acknowledging how Briscoe has nurtured these relationships, Dale Earnhardt Jr expressed his reasons for considering the 29-year-old as a favorite to join Joe Gibbs Racing. He said, “The reason why this one’s coming together so quickly is because Briscoe has a ton of financial support and he himself has created it. The partnerships that he’s bringing, the multi-million dollar deals he is bringing along, he has nurtured them to his benefit.”

Despite Chase Briscoe’s performances under very difficult circumstances at Stewart-Haas Racing, he does pose a risk for Joe Gibbs Racing. With just one Cup Series win and one playoff appearance in his career, Briscoe hasn’t set the world alight through his performances yet. However, the soon-to-be free agent is reported to have multiple offers on the table, prompting Briscoe to say “It’s nice to feel wanted.”

Driving a Championship winner car at Joe Gibbs Racing could be exactly what Briscoe needs to show his true potential. One thing’s for sure, Briscoe will be filling a vacant seat on the team rather than replacing Martin Truex Jr. What he’s actually looking for now is a spot with potential peace.

With twins on the way, Chase Briscoe is looking for a good culture at the team he joins next. Already a father of a two-year-old son, Briscoe, and his wife Merissa, will have their parenting responsibilities at the top of their priority list. Having spent seven seasons with Stewart-Haas Racing, since his inaugural part-time campaign in the Xfinity Series, Briscoe finds himself in the unfamiliar situation of having a list of suitors vying for his signature. This means the 29-year-old can select a race team that fits his circumstances.

Speaking about a potential deal with a new team, Chase Briscoe said, “Definitely working on it. Feel like I’m pretty close I think, so yeah. Nothing to announce yet, but definitely working on it. Feel pretty good about it. In the past, it’s always been kind of just, ‘this is where you’re gonna go,’ and it’s never been my choice in my entire career of where I go. So yeah, that’s been unique. It’s definitely been, honestly, a confidence builder I think for me, just the fact that multiple teams want me.”

If Chase Briscoe does end up going from Stewart-Haas Racing to one of the most coveted teams in the NASCAR Cup Series, it’ll be nothing short of amazing for the driver. With negotiations underway, it remains to be seen where Chase Briscoe ends up, but given the constraints in which he’s currently operating, any destination will be an upgrade. It could be the start of a new era for Chase Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing, one which could see the driver potentially win the Championship in the future.
