It was not long ago that the NASCAR community was baffled by the performance of Hendrick Motorsports in the Cup Series. The team seemed to be invincible in every true sense, winning week-in and week-out. This team has surely laid the tone for notching victories in the most adverse of situations, but it seems that this notion seems to have lost its efficacy in the 2023 Cup Series season.

On the contrary, its rival team Joe Gibbs Racing has taken charge of its narrative and re-wrote its diegesis. This is surely apparent through the performance that the team has portrayed in the ongoing season of NASCAR. Moreover, it seems that the day is not far when the Toyota-backed team would be usurping Hendrick Motorsports from its pedestal and be crowned with the title.

The groundwork for this has already begun in the current season and is evident, especially after the recent four accomplishments within the camp, which may compel Hendrick Motorsports to permute and rearrange its players in order to rise back in position and fight back its rival after in the waging war of championship.

Joe Gibbs Racing throws a hard punch as it acts as a roadblock to HMS’ success

If the results from the 2022 Cup Series are to be remembered correctly, it will be evident that it was this team that was racing in a different league of its own and was beyond the grip of the other teams. Hendrick Motorsports went on to win the regular season championship through the impetus shown by Chase Elliott. His teammates were surely not far behind in the race to the championship.

However, the JGR team was staggering way behind as the drivers struggled to find traction on the tracks of NASCAR. The team’s star veteran driver and Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr also failed to enter the playoffs. Added to this, the team was also mired in sponsorship struggles and the potential departure of Kyle Busch.

Having said that and fast-forwarding to the 2023 season, it seems that there is a reversal of roles in both teams. Hendrick Motorsports would surely want this season to be forgotten and never reminded, given the series of mishaps that have ensued from the beginning of the season. Whether it was being levied with a hefty penalty or losing, it’s two of its drivers for weeks due to individual injuries, and not to forget one race suspension thrashed upon Chase Elliott, HMS has witnessed all the worst possible scenarios that can ever exist.

Although it would be unfair to say that the team did not witness instances where they could rejoice, especially after the impeccable performance of William Byron scoring four victories in the season and also Kyle Larson’s win at Richmond. However, these rejoices were momentary as JGR tried to assert its dominance through the help of the roster of drivers.

This assertion was perceptible when Martin Truex Jr. was able to break away from the slump and net three victories and lead the scoreboard. Furthermore, Martin Truex Jr. also cleared the air about his retirement and revealed that he would be returning for another season with JGR.

In an interview with NBC, Martin Truex Jr. expressed after revealing his comeback, “Yeah, it’s okay, I guess. I don’t mean really mind it either way but excited obviously to extend and keep doing what we have been doing with this team. They are doing a great job everything’s clicking right now and we got a lot of good going for us, so hopefully we can keep that up and keep having fun.”

The achievements don’t end here as Denny Hamlin seemed to have climbed back in points standing after notching two victories and surpassing HMS prodigy William Byron with 705 points. The victory at Pocono marked the 50th win for Hamlin and also 600 victories for Toyota. This concretizes JGR’s chances of winning the regular-season championship, causing HMS to bite the dust and relinquish its championship crown.

Moreover, JGR’s Christopher Bell is also worth mentioning. The young driver has already clinched a victory in the season and confirmed his playoff berth. Bell has also clinched two pole positions this season, making him stand at par with his other two veteran teammates.

To add the cherry on top, the other driver who is worth mentioning is John Hunter Nemechek. The Xfinity Series driver is apparently riding the waves of victory as he earned his 5th victory in the season on the track of Michigan. The win also marked a special feat- the 200th Xfinity victory for team JGR.

These instances do surmise the fact that JGR is coming stronger than ever and is ready to take the extra mile in order to clinch and add another championship to its name. Nevertheless, to make a case for HMS, the team still has a minuscule chance of making sure that four of its driver is able to enter the playoffs and retain their crown. While Michigan turned out to be a nightmare for Chase Elliott, the No.9 still has three races left to come out strong and enter the playoffs.

This may surely seem to be improbable for many but not impossible for a championship-winning driver like Chase Elliott, and it won’t be long before the answer is delivered.
