Martin Truex Jr has officially announced his retirement at the end of the 2024 season, concluding a 19-year career in NASCAR that boasts 34 Cup Series victories and a 2017 championship. Truex’s tenure has been legendary, with his calm demeanor and exceptional skill on the track earning him reverence among peers and fans alike. His influence on the younger generation of drivers is profound, with many looking up to his humility and prowess.
Christopher Bell, one of the rising stars at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), has often spoken about Truex’s impact on his career. As Truex steps away, the NASCAR community is abuzz with reflections on his legacy and the implications for JGR. How does Bell view this transition and Truex’s remarkable journey?

Christopher Bell himself has shown remarkable consistency this season. He is currently ranked 9th in the driver standings with 465 points and has secured 2 wins and 9 top-10 finishes across 16 races, this season. This includes a significant win at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600. As Bell continues to rise, one wonders, who inspires this young talent the most in his journey to greatness?
In an interview with Frontstretch, C. Bell underscored the kind of impact, Martin Truex Jr had on his career. “I’m trying to think of a good way to put it. I guess ego would be the right word. He’s got no ego. He’s got no ‘I’m-better-than-you’ attitude. He’s just a very normal person who does himself.”
He further added, “And I respect the hell out of him because he is a superstar in the Cup Series but he just does himself. He’s non-flashy. He doesn’t care about what anyone else thinks.” Bell shared, reflecting the deep admiration and the guiding light Truex represents for him. At the same time, the #20 Toyota driver is not shy about revealing his desires openly, as he confessed, “He is Martin Truex, Sr. And, frankly, that’s who I want to be. Christopher Bell, but it’s the same style.”
Furthermore, Bell’s performance this season is a testament to his hard work and the inspiration he draws from legends like Truex. The retirement of Truex poses a significant shift within JGR, both in terms of their sponsorship commitments and racing talent. Truex’s departure is not just an end but also a beginning for drivers like Bell to step up and carry forward the torch.

Truex’s career achievements are impressive. 32 of his 34 Cup Series victories came after he joined Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and aligned with Toyota affiliates. His partnership with crew chief James Small has been particularly fruitful. This is highlighted by memorable wins like the dominant 2021 Darlington race. This season, despite facing several ups and downs, Truex has been competitive, currently ranked 5th in the Cup points. His retirement marks the end of a significant era for JGR. Joe Gibbs and his team must navigate this transition carefully.
Truex’s strong association with Bass Pro Shops and its founder, John Morris, has been a pivotal point of his career. This relationship brought substantial sponsorship that might see a shift as Truex steps back. This loss is further fuelled by Noah Gragson’s strong tie with Bass Pro and RCR. With SHR charters up for grabs, the likelihood of Joe Gibb’s JGR acquiring Gragson remains low.

The other option for SHR is to go for Josh Berry. But no initiatives have been taken in that direction so far. Berry, like Gragson, has given a stellar performance this year with multiple top-ten finishes and a single top-five finish. But Front Row Motorsports is more likely to get their hands on him first. The reason is that FRM has agreed to buy its third charter for a reported $20–25 million.
Front Row Motorsports is set to pay between $20M and $25M for a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing, a decrease from last year’s record fee.
