One learns from its own mistakes. But sometimes these mistakes are irrevocable and often leave a permanent mark on the psyche of the human mind. It often tends to give a cold foot in doing the activity, for the fear of reiterating the same mistakes. Even the president of Joe Gibbs Racing was a victim of such a mistake. And Dave Alepern is yet to overcome this fear, even though being a part of NASCAR for so long. He himself discloses this fact.
JGR president reveals how he stuck a bottle in the car
In a recent video that Joe Gibbs Racing posted on their channel, the president of JGR seemed to disclose these facts. He revealed, “I have been going to the racetrack for over 30 years and I have only ever participated in one pit stop. Didn’t go well.”

Dave Alpern admitted what had gone wrong that made him stay away from the pit lanes. He divulged, “When a driver comes to a pit stop you generally hand them a water bottle on a pole. The guy that normally does that job was using the bathroom. So they pointed at me and then pointed at the pole that holds the water bottle. So I figured that meant I gotta give Bobby [Bobby Labonte] his water bottle.”
He added to his horrors, “And so I got the water and I stuck it on the pole. So there’s a window net and there’s a little opening and stuck it in perfectly. And then Bobby did something I had never contemplated. He stuck his hand out and waved, basically saying, I don’t want it. So when I pulled the bottle out, the bottle stuck on the window net and it came out of the pole and it fell on the pit road.”
And the disaster reached its climax when, “And I gasped as the guys were running around to change tires on this side. And the bottle rolled right under where the jack goes. So the jack man sticks the jack in the water bottle, dislodges, and goes under the back tire. And when the car does a burnout to leave, it spins out and the water bottle shooters 100 yards down pit road.”

To his utter shame, the JGR president added, “And on cue, every guy in the pit turns and looks at me and just shakes their head. And I have this pole in my hand and just turn around in shame and wandered back to the back.”
