Mavis Tires & Brakes, one of the largest independent tire and service providers in the United States, has partnered with Joe Gibbs Racing. They are to become the primary sponsor of Denny Hamlin’s #11 Toyota Camry for five of the next six NASCAR Cup Series events. The partnership kicks off at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. However, there is an added element of intrigue to this story.
During the recent episode of his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast, Denny Hamlin spoke about NASCAR’s new splitter configuration and recalled tires from the ’90s, while also putting forth his disaffection with the current product Goodyear supplies to NASCAR.

Right before joining hands with Mavis Tires & Brakes, Denny Hamlin bashed Goodyear
Denny Hamlin, a three-time winner at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, will aim for his fourth victory at the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series Crayon 301. He acknowledged the importance of qualifying well tires and maintaining a strong position throughout the race.
The conversation started with “lift splitter,” which is recently revealed by NASCAR. While giving a lift to the front cars and downforce to the cars following, it serves dirty air becomes less of an issue for the latter. Hamlin believes that far from aerodynamics, the problem lies in the fact that tires are not wearing off, unlike in the 90s.
Hamlin said, “You gotta have downforce to wear out of the tire or you have to make the tire much, much softer. The level of downforce these cars have is the lowest since it has been in the 90s. And when they put the splitter on it, it’s going to be lower than that.” Furthermore, he said, one cannot reduce downforce without compensating for it with the tire.
“So we have to keep make sure that and I know that Goodyear did a test at New Hampshire. And we’re bringing a new tire this weekend that is more grip… Got to just keep making it more aggressive until we have to pit because we’re wearing out tires. That’s for sure that that will create the lifetime variation to these cars.”
What the Joe Gibbs Racing driver is saying does sound exciting in terms of how it all can affect race strategies, making them more complex. JGR’s new partnership will continue at Pocono Raceway, Richmond Raceway, Michigan International Speedway, and Watkins Glen International. And let’s just say, the #11 car looks poppin’.
