In light of Ty Gibbs’ most recent P5 finish in the #54 car at Vegas last week, Joe Gibbs Racing took to Twitter to announce their new alternative logo, inspired by the echoes of the original JGR Motocross emblem, which was developed by Ty’s late father, Coy Gibbs.

Joe Gibbs’ younger son, Coy Gibbs, was the driving force behind JGR’s much-discussed motocross team from 2008 to 2020. His ability to mold young talent into champions was truly undeniable. His sudden passing just two years after the curtains were drawn on JGRMX left a void in the Gibbs family and the entire JGR organization.

While the JGRMX team didn’t quite achieve the revolutionary impact Coy had envisioned, their twelve-year run certainly left its mark. A prestigious win at the season-opening Anaheim 1 in only their second year in AMA, with Josh Grant, mirrored the success of the NASCAR team’s inaugural Daytona 500 triumph with Dale Jarrett in 1993, their second season in the Winston Cup.

Fast forward to 2024, and the tide of emotions seems to be there in Joe Gibbs Racing. In a heartfelt reveal on Twitter, the 5-time Cup Series champions announced their new alternate logo, a design echoing the one Coy crafted for their Motocross venture years ago. The ‘new’ emblem features bold “JGR” lettering, a stark difference from their ‘checkered flag’ and ‘initials in crimson’ inscribed traditional logo.

While the Gibbs family has become synonymous with NASCAR glory, their passion for racing truly began on two-wheeled crotch rockets.

Joe Gibbs himself is not just a dual-sport Hall of Famer (NASCAR & NFL), he also has a penchant for bikes. The North Carolina native spent his younger days riding “Maicos and CZs” during the ’50s and ’60s. This love for motorcycles naturally got passed down to his sons, Coy and J. D. Gibbs.

However, the old logo’s journey to NASCAR today began with Eric Schaffer, JGR’s EVP/Chief Commercial Officer. Hired in 2023, the former Washington Commanders’ executive, a four-year colleague with Coach Gibbs, stumbled upon the logo during a “deep dive” into the team’s history. Intrigued by its design and upon learning its connection to Coy, Schaffer envisioned a way to honor Coy’s memory while offering the team a new type of branding and merchandising flexibility.

According to Schaffer, even Heather Gibbs, Coy’s widow, and Ty Gibbs’ mother found the “alternative” logo a source of comfort. Schaffer told TobyChristie.com recently, “For Christmas, [Heather] wanted the logo t-shirt that all of the Xfinity drivers wore. She wanted it for all of her kids and that kind of thing. It’s a big deal. If it makes them smile and get think about Coy, it’s a great add-on in addition to being something that is hopefully good for our company, and fun and new and hopefully adds something.”
