The youngest driver of JGR has been turning heads with his performance right from the start of the 2024 season. After the Circuit of The Americas race, Ty Gibbs jumped to second place in the regular season championship standings, trailing only his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Martin Truex Jr. Ty Gibbs’ career stats so far, support the fact that victory is just a matter of time for him.
Ahead of the race at Richmond Raceway on Sunday, all eyes are on the 21-year-old JGR driver. Recently, O’Reilly Auto Parts Pit Reporters sat down to discuss how Gibbs’ performances assure them of a cup win very soon.

Brett McMillan, from PRN, delves into the impressive start by Gibbs Racing, joined by Lee Spencer and Reid Spencer, in an episode of GoPRNLive. After five straight top 10s now and a P3 finish last week, McMillan asked Lee if she’s confident about young Ty Gibbs winning his much-deserved race this year.
Lee Spencer is all praise for Joe Gibbs’ grandson and mentions that it is just a matter of time. She also stated that Ty has all the support he needs at his disposal, from experienced teammates, to an amazing crew around him. Lee said, “Yeah and a 7.8 average finish, the best on the tour, right? And you are absolutely right, we’ve been talking about this for a few weeks.”
“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when….Not sure whether it will happen at Richmond or Martinsville. Martinsville has been a great track for Toyota. Richmond I think between Denny and Martin, they’ve won seven times at that track. So, he could be the next guy to get that first-time win,” added Lee.

The entire JGR team is running riots these days with all four drivers in Top 10 in Cup Series standings. Considering their impressive track records and expertise at Richmond Raceway, it’s highly anticipated that both Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. will vigorously contend for yet another victory on this iconic track.

Despite a P17 at Daytona 500, Gibbs’ trajectory has been soaring high this season in the NASCAR Cup Series. In the very next race Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta, he secured a Top 10 position. Since then, the JGR #54 secured a P5 or above in the Cup Series. His most challenging and noteworthy performance will be at Phoenix Raceway.
When a lot of other experienced drivers struggled at the revamped track, Ty raced as if nothing really changed. Having secured the 2nd spot during pole behind his teammate Hamlin, he went up to finish at P3. Even at the last Cup Series race at COTA, a track where an insane amount of penalties were issued, Ty dashed to finish third. Despite the chaotic environment, his composed performance stood out, leaving fans impressed with his poise and skill on the track.

When faced with challenging tracks, his true potential shines through. Joe Gibbs must indeed feel immense pride witnessing the unwavering resilience and temperament displayed by his grandson. Is Ty Gibbs going to win his first Cup Series race at Richmond? If not, perhaps another opportunity awaits him at Martinsville. But if this performance continues, we can surely vouch for more than one victory on his name in 2024.
