The #54 kid does know how to make a noise with his presence. The 22-year-old grandson of Joe Gibbs, Ty Gibbs, has been making a mark ever since his first NASCAR appearance. And he is crushing the competition in the NASCAR Cup Series in just his second season as a full-time driver.
Ty Gibbs ranks 10th in the 2024 NCS Standings, which will make it his career’s first playoff entry in the premiere series. It is a milestone in NASCAR, especially for a driver his age. He has led just over 350 laps throughout the season and has high hopes for the post-season as well.

The 2023 NCS Sunoco Rookie of the Year is entering the ‘track too tough to tame’ with a surplus of 39 points from the cutoff to get to the post-season. There is a tough battle still ongoing amongst the bubble drivers. But Ty Gibbs has a decent buffer to wane off the competition. Chris Buescher is next in line, contending for the last spot with surplus points.
The 2024 season has been kind to Ty Gibbs as he has 7 top-5s. He could’ve easily had a race win at some of these races where he finished runner-up such as the one at Darlington in May. The sophomore driver also had multiple pole starts during the season. But he was left short of the contention he had at the beginning of the season of winning multiple races.
Nonetheless, this young driver is not short of motivation. Ty Gibbs spoke to Bob Pockrass about his season so far and said, “I think we put in a lot this year. I think it was mostly me which usually it is. But I felt like we were really fast this Spring. We’d love for that to translate to it today this weekend and hopefully we have a good thing then.“ Ty Gibbs summed up his season and the success he’s had through these boastful 4-words.

Entering the NASCAR scene just 4 years back, his performance has been phenomenal. He started off by driving part-time in Xfinity and getting a victory lane on his very first start at one of the most prestigious tracks of Daytona. He then graduated as a full-time Xfinity driver, dominating the championship and driving the title home in his rookie year. He also substituted for Kurt Busch at 23XI Racing in NCS that season.
He won the rookie award in his NCS debut season and is now in contention for the Playoffs. What a journey in just a four-year career. It will bring immense pleasure to watch this young driver join the 16-driver field after Darlington. As he rightly put it, “We put in a lot of hard work for this race and we’ll go at it with a bang. I don’t really know that necessarily how I make the Playoffs. I think I just have to have a clean day and not wreck out or anything. So, I think we’re pretty close.”
