With the rest of JGR amicably represented early with 2 out of 6 race wins in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series. 21-year-old thundering phenom Ty Gibbs has emerged as Grandpa Joe Gibbs’ most promising driver in just his second season in NASCAR. Although the young driver’s career has only been about half a decade, he has already claimed the Xfinity Series championship in 2022, as well as the ARCA Menards Series Championship in 2021. By the look of things, Ty seems destined to live up to the Hall of Fame-caliber pedigree associated with the Gibbs name.
However, the youngest driver of the JGR stable recently emerged as the beacon of “unbothered” energy. Ty Gibbs shrugs off all heavy “expectations” that come after topping out the NASCAR power rankings, heading into only the seventh Cup Series race of his sophomore season.

Last week at COTA, JGR’s #54 driver pulled his first double duty of the season, as he also took over the #19 Toyota Supra, to finish P24 in Joe Gibbs Racing’s Xfinity efforts at Austin. His disappointments were overturned last Sunday when he took his Camry XSE to a 2-3 podium finish behind Christopher Bell’s botched efforts of securing a second race win in the 2024 season. Surprisingly, Bell’s Phoenix victory earlier this month also saw Gibbs finish at P3. The rising star now has three top-5 finishes this season, and a lot of whispers suggest he is on the way to his first career Cup victory very soon.
This exact sentiment was touched upon recently, with regard to the massive expectations on a 21-year-old Gibbs by Dan “Spider” DiOrio in Barstool Sports’ NASCAR podcast “Rubbin’ is Racing”. Spider emphasized how the #54 looked like the “car to beat” throughout the Austin weekend, as Gibbs impressively kicked off his advance by qualifying P2 behind eventual race winner William Byron. When Spider asked Gibbs how he managed the “expectations” and handled “that kind of unprecedented territory.”
The young #54 had a mature reply ready for the cast. “For me, I just don’t really see that stuff, to be honest with you. I’m not on that side of the Instagram reels, you know, looking at that stuff, so I’m looking at different stuff.” Spider visibly flabbergasted by Gibbs’ humility bluntly retorted with the contrary narrative of how Coach Gibbs’ grandson “had the fastest car” at COTA.
Ty then went on to explain his nonchalant perspective towards the acclaim he has received as of late: “I mean I had a great car I knew it but I just did I just don’t look at that stuff like I just don’t look at it you know… That’s just the stuff that I don’t focus on because it doesn’t make me any better at all at the end of the day. I’d rather play Fortnite than look at that stuff,” declared Gibbs in a perfect 4-word example. Signs of the relatable superstar he is slowly turning into for his grandfather’s gloried organization.

Out of the 2 wins JGR has claimed so far this season, Denny Hamlin is the other driver to make it a double for Coach Gibbs with a repeat Bristol victory prior to the Texas Grand Prix. The controversial #11 star, waiting for his inaugural Cup Series victory, is now 43 years old and heading into his 19th Cup Series season. JGR’s #19 driver Martin Truex Jr claims the same age as Hamlin, albeit boasting the 2017 Bill France Cup and two decades of experience to show for it. This results in half of JGR’s quartet being looked upon as “aging stars” on the other side of 40.
Although 29-year-old Christopher Bell may leave some respite for Joe Gibbs in the coming seasons, his grandson has already shown flashes of a futuristic leader, emerging into a potential future Cup champion, with incredible popularity, and all the know-how of the latest advancements in communications between the fans and NASCAR. The #54 driver is well aware of his “pull” as he readies himself for the Richmond race week.
However, as the conversations with Spider evolved on the podcast, Gibbs revealed an interesting tidbit concerning the “2024 Paris Olympics break” in August when NASCAR will pause the excitement for almost two weeks. Gibbs explained how he would “recharge” in this temporary “off-season.”

“I have a lot of friends that uh live in London right now and they’ve been talking about going to Ibiza and I don’t know if you’ve heard of it but seems like a good time and I would like to check it out but we’ll see what happens.” As his young career evolves in glory with each passing race, so will the NASCAR world.
