The gamble was big, with the possibility of situations going awry for the team owner Joe Gibbs, when he signed in his grandson Ty Gibbs for the 2023 season. Kyle Busch, who had been part of the 4-drivers roster, was forced to look for a new team as his primary sponsor M&M’s had announced it would withdraw from NASCAR after the 2022 season.
While many termed it unfair and raised questions about his talent, the team boss and grandfather Joe Gibbs was ready to take the leap of faith for his grandson, who went on to win the 2022 Xfinity Series championship. Nonetheless, filling in the shoes of Kyle Busch was easier said than done, but the rookie Ty Gibbs is surely putting out a brave fight in his first year in the Cup Series.
But now, it seems his grandfather seems to have concerns lately over his driving skills as Joe Gibbs addresses his grandson’s talent in New Hampshire.

Grandfather Joe Gibbs emphasizes Ty Gibbs’ amateur state as a driver in the Cup Series
As an Xfinity Series driver, Ty Gibbs always portrayed an aggressive demeanor on the tracks of NASCAR. But the rookie driver in the Cup Series has so far stayed away from any form of controversies. Moreover, he is still looking for a race win in order to make his foothold strong enough among the veterans of the series.
Ty Gibbs in his first year, driving the No.54 Toyota Camry, has assuredly exhibited his racing caliber but still has a long way to go. Even his grandfather does not deny the fact in the post-race interview in New Hampshire. The team boss was asked what was his notions on his grandson’s journey so far in the elite format as he is set to complete a year in the series, in the upcoming week.
Mr. Gibbs expressed in the post-race presser, “Well, I think it is so hard when you step up, so we just take — we’re after it with him. I think he’s had six top 10s or so, and had some disappointments. Today was one of them.”
“So I think it’s a learning process. It’s extremely hard, and I think we’ve seen in the past that even the guys that wind up being superstars, it takes a while. I think he’s working hard at it, and I think Chris and he have a real partnership and kind of get along good, have a good chemistry.”
“We’ve got great sponsors there. Monster, He Gets Us on the car, and Interstate, that’s a great three-team effort for us and sponsorship, which is great,” the grandfather asserted.

Speaking of disappointment, the race in New Hampshire was surely not satisfactory for Ty Gibbs and his No 54 team. The rookie driver had already witnessed a tough day during the qualifiers as he failed to get traction on the track, and it felt like the car was a handful for the driver. Gibbs started the race from the back of the field.

Nevertheless, the driver was desperate to win the extra stage points and make his way for his maiden playoffs. For this, he drove from the back, up to the front of the track. But it was not long before the driver was able to hold off his position as Alex Bowman from Hendrick Motorsports made contact with Gibbs.
Owing to this incident, the rookie tried to churn out the perfect narrative of redemption as he wrecked Alex Bowman, after making contact with Bowman’s left rear recorder panel. This incident caused Alex Bowman to be shoved to the outside wall, and also the issuance of the seventh caution of the race.
The decision by NASCAR irked the fans as they considered it unwarranted and for no good reason and heaved their disappointment about the driver on social media.

These issues highlight one thing for sure: Ty Gibbs has still a long way to go before he can clinch a Cup Series title. Although being under the tutelage of his grandfather and the other veterans of the team, the rookie driver has still room for improvement before he can stand on par with his other veteran drivers in his team.
