Supporters, they’re undoubtedly an important element of any athlete or any successful person’s journey. There’s only so far one can go on their own because to go beyond that point, one needs support. For athletes, the support is mostly their fans and their families. Yet sometimes, some fans can really take things a little too far. Just ask Kamui Kobayashi.

The Japanese driver who is currently taking part in the Rolex 24 hrs of Daytona wouldn’t have imagined that he will become the co-owner of the track he’s racing on.

Or at least that’s what Wikipedia says.

Journalist Jenna Fryer pointed out how someone edited the Daytona International Speedway’s Wikipedia page and made Kobayashi its co-owner alongside Wayne Taylor.

This prank could be because both Kobayashi and Taylor have won the Rolex 24 twice each in their careers.

And hilarious though it is, whoever made the Japanese and the South African drivers the owners of the track, were perhaps going for an ‘owned’ joke.

“I was just a driver” – Kamui Kobayashi on the new role

The reigning 24 hrs of Le Mans winner is currently at a crossroads in his career now that he’s not only a driver but a team principal for Toyota Gazoo Racing.

“I don’t know if I can do it, but I have to do it,” Kobayashi said. “I will say what experience I have — nothing. I’ve never been a team owner, I was just a driver. But I love motorsports, I love to work, and I love to be part of a successful team.”

“This was offered by Mr. Toyoda and he looked at how I work with the team, how I communicate with the team, our feedback, and he wanted it to be this way. I could not say no,” he added.

The Wikipedia page of the DIS was edited back in the ownership and currently, Kamui Kobayashi is no longer its co-owner, which is factually correct. But if there’s one thing that needs editing on a Wikipedia page, it’s Kobayashi’s team principal bit on his page.

One wonders if that will happen when the driver fully embraces his new role.
