For a 20-year-old Truck Series racer, an opportunity to drive in a Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway would be a dream come true. Jimmie Johnson‘s Legacy Motorsports made it possible through their #42 Chevrolet in the YellaWood 500 last week. Richard Petty’s former team is in the process of finding its footing in an erratic year. And Carson Hocevar benefitted through Cup starts in selected races this year.
Unfortunately for Hocevar, his race was cut short by a brutal collision that shattered his hopes for a Talladega finish. As he spun out of the treacherous racetrack, he spoke two words on the radio, which agonized the most hardened viewers.

Carson Hocevar qualified for the Truck playoffs with three spectacular wins this year. But it was the allure of the Next Gen car that drew him toward the Cup races this year. After a mid-season race with Spire Motorsports, he teamed up with Petty‘s lifelong legacy for a playoff ride beyond his imagination.
After two Top 20 finishes, the young driver truly came to his own with an 11th-place performance at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Then it was time to test his mettle on the reputed tri-oval of Talladega.
Although he could not obtain an ideal starting position during the race qualifier, he was determined to make up for it during the race. A combination of shrewd skills and timely luck pushed him ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and he earned a free pass to compete at the front.
However, that maneuver also brought him between Brad Keselowski and his ruthless ambitions. RFK Racing‘s #6 driver was willing to go to any lengths in pursuit of the checkered flag.
When Hocevar’s spotter, Earl Barban, noticed Keselowski closing in, he promptly relayed, “#6 lined up in your mirror” to the rookie driver. But the #42 car could do nothing but watch as the RFK team owner bumped into him to shove him aside.
As the Chevrolet wildly spun out of control, Barban surmised, “I think the #6 turned you”. There was very little Hocevar could do to salvage his run. In his despair, he spoke the only words he knew for certain at that moment, “I’m destroyed”.
Fans and commentators resented Keselowski’s disregard for Hocevar’s inexperienced malleability. But it was their post-race interviews that truly surprised the racing community.

Brad Keselowski has a remarkable history with the challenging superspeedway. With an average finish of 15.9, the talented racer secured 6 victories and 10 Top 5 positions there in his career. This past Sunday, after winning Stage 2, Keselowski was poised to celebrate a 7th triumph till his aggressive tactics halted his progress. Once he made contact with Carson Hocevar on lap 163, the #6 driver could not recover from the impact either. But what drew the audience’s ire was his assessment of the situation.
Keselowski refused to accept any responsibility for the incident and faulted Jimmie Johnson’s car for not adapting well to a minor hit. On the other hand, despite not causing the wreck, Hocevar chose to shoulder the blame and hoped to learn from his experiences.
“I don’t know if there’s something I could have done differently to not put myself in that situation. I wasn’t that good of a leader. I was kind of thinking myself the ride in here…I gotta go do my homework. I mean it’s bad but nice to have a cup race under my belt.”ADVERTISEMENT
