When Jimmie Johnson joined Richard Petty to work on Legacy Motor Club, he wanted to turn the team around. The team, which was previously operated by The King, was not where anyone would like it to be for the legacy Petty carries. So when they had a chance to work with the record-holding 7-time Cup Series champion Johnson, they couldn’t refuse.

With Jimmie Johnson in the picture, the team changed its name from Petty GMS Motorsports to Legacy Motor Club, and with that came a slew of changes. First, they decided to change the manufacturer from Chevrolet to Toyota, and next came the day when the team announced that the crew chief for Erik Jones’ No. 43 team would be changing from Dave Elenz to Ben Beshore. With so many changes, the team has still struggled to put out results and the fans are noticing it.

The Roval race was a disaster for Legacy Motor Club, as Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek both had to retire from the race after an accident. Because of the DNF, Jones ended his race 34th and Nemechek came in 35th. Both the teammates were involved in a crash with Ross Chastain into turn 7. The new hairpin turned out to be much trickier than the drivers thought, and in one move, their race was over.

Right before Dave Elenz was replaced, he managed to help Erik Jones break his slump and finish 5th at Talladega. Whether this decision was the right one to make is for time to tell; however, the way the new pair delivered in their first race was far from what Jimmie Johnson and Co. must have hoped for. Fans saw the disaster at the Roval, and from how the team performed, Jimmie Johnson is being held accountable for the results.

Fans aren’t holding back when it comes to Legacy Motor Club’s recent struggles. One fan summed up John Hunter Nemechek’s situation on Reddit, pointing out, “JHN took the biggest gamble on his career just to make it back to a Cup team who is a terror to themselves.” It’s hard to argue with that, considering Nemechek’s leap back into Cup racing landed him at a team that’s barely keeping itself together, let alone making a push for wins.

The frustration with Legacy Motor Club is echoing throughout the fanbase, with some flat-out calling it a “Legacy Motor Club disasterclass.” The name change might’ve brought high hopes, but on-track performance is painting a different picture.

One fan got straight to the point about the management shakeups, joking, “The only legacy that Legacy MC will leave is proving that having more middle managers has a direct correlation to s–t performance.”. With so many changes, it seems like the team’s focus is getting lost in translation, and the results—or lack thereof—are showing.

Meanwhile, others feel for Nemechek’s rough situation. “I just can’t get over that JHN restarted his career just to get out in a Toyota Pipeline and end up at Legacy to fucking hate his life,” one fan vented, expressing the same disbelief many others have about how this move has panned out for him so far.

Finally, the performance issues at Legacy Motor Club have made some fans appreciate other team owners more. “Seeing LMC makes me kind of realize that Brad must be an incredible owner,” one fan remarked, comparing Johnson’s team struggles with the success Brad Keselowski has seen at RFK Racing. It seems like not all owner-driver situations are created equal.

That being said, do you think that Legacy Motor Club will redeem itself soon? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
