The Chicago Street Race is one of the biggest events in the 2023 NASCAR season. And much like any new race the series introduces, it’s getting plenty of flak from the people doubting the idea, along with people who just don’t understand racing much. But Jimmie Johnson just shut all the doubters down, getting everyone excited about the upcoming race.

The NASCAR grid heading to Chicago in July for its first-ever street race. Of course, it’s a massive event for the season because the drivers have never truly experienced competing in a street race. Naturally, there are a lot of doubters out there hating on the race too. And there is somewhat of a good reason for not being fond of it just because of the way the race is set on the calendar.

In a recent episode of the ‘Rubbin’ is Racing’ podcast, one of the co-hosts argued in favor of the doubters as he explained, “There are a lot of people within Chicago who just don’t want to see the traffic, first of all. And it’s gonna be the weekend before the 4 July. It is gonna be an absolute fucking abomination trying to get around Chicago that week. It’s gonna be crazy.”

This isn’t the first time people are doubting a new race NASCAR introduced, because that’s exactly what happened when they announced the LA Coliseum last year. And Johnson used that in his argument as he said, They also said, ‘how the hell you gonna fit a racetrack inside the LA coliseum?’ And they did that. So, yeah, wasn’t a problem.”

He further spoke in favor of Chicago as he brought back his experience on the track, “I mean, the last two years I spent in IndyCar, they do it all the time. And I was a part of the Street Race in Nashville, for its debut and ‘21 and went back in ‘22. And yeah, I mean, I’m sure there are mixed reviews in town when you live there and you got to deal with traffic and not everybody’s a race fan, but the event in the city racing vibe that takes place. It’s incredible.”
