The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson, has several notable achievements under his belt. However, the 2023 season showed a new challenge for him, a challenge at Le Mans, which turned out to be memorable and one of his favorites. He recently revealed in an Instagram post what stood out as his favorite memory of the year in NASCAR. The post hinted at the intensity and thankfulness he felt for being part of this very special project.
Jimmie Johnson shares his gratitude to the amazing team
Le Mans was introduced to Jimmie Johnson by his family and holds great relevance. In one of his interviews with the 24H Le Mans, he said, I remember my father showed me photos of drivers running across the track to their cars and thought, what’s that? I have always had a great interest in sports car racing and by the idea of coming to Le Mans.” Looks like for Jhonson, the oldest active endurance racing event in the world held a special place.

In an interview for Harvard Business Review, the 48-year-old was asked the question: how long he would continue and what would he do afterward? To this, he responded, “I have other interests and desires in racing, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, or off-road truck racing. I’m also interested in other endurance and adventure sports. I’ve done a half-Ironman, and I really want to do a full one, but I can’t with my racing schedule.”
Having contested in IndyCar the IMSA and the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, the champion driver took it with self-assurance, driving the Garage56 NASCAR entry. As 2023 nears its end, Jhonson took to Instagram to express the best of this year, he wrote, “The 2023 season holds some great memories. One of my favorite projects this year was taking on Le Mans with the @nascarg56 program. So grateful to have been part of such an amazing team.”

Jimmie Johnson’s involvement in the Le Mans race was made possible through the NASCAR G56 program. The NASCAR G56 program, a combined attempt among NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet, and Goodyear, was classified in the Innovative Car category, a single-car class among the 62 entrants.
Though Johnson and Team could not win the race, they did manage to finish the race, winding up 39th overall and 10th in their class, despite facing some driveline problems in the final few hours of the event.
Moreover, the team made 26 pit stops over the race track, and alongside Jimmie Johnson, were Jenson Button and Mike Rockenfeller, wherein Rockenfeller started it off and then handed it over to Johnson who then passed the baton to Button.
