The 2025 Indy 500 will be quite a spectacle. Widely considered to be one of the biggest racing events, not just in the United States but also globally, its 109th iteration this May is already giving fans plenty of talking points with the hype being bigger than ever. Kyle Larson will be attempting another ‘double’, hoping that mother nature doesn’t play spoilsport this time around while two legendary sports figures are also set to team up at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

According to NTT IndyCar Series reporter Tony Donohue, Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson will be teaming up as co-owners of Chip Ganassi Racing’s fourth entry at the 2025 Indy 500. If that doesn’t dominate the headlines, what will?

It’s a collaboration for the ages. Two seven-time champions are all set to team up for one of the biggest racing events of the year and while the news is not ‘official’, the headlines will be a good way of publicizing IndyCar in its first year with FOX Sports. Tom Brady recently starred in an advertisement with Josef Newgarden and Alex Palou and has joined FOX Sports’ booth for the NFL in 2024, while Jimmie Johnson will be involved in the Indianapolis 500 once again, only this time as an owner instead of a driver.

IndyCar reporter Tony Donohue broke the news on the The Tony D Podcast. He revealed, “Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson are joining forces to be co-owners alongside Chip Ganassi of the fourth entry for the 19th Indianapolis 500 coming up in May, and the driver would be … Sebastien Bourdais.” Donohue also went on to say that Carvana has been announced as a sponsor for the team, an interesting set of developments in the IndyCar racing series.

It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that IndyCar will take full advantage of the collaboration between Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson. Both the figures are heavyweights in their sports and provide an invaluable marketing opportunity for the racing series to promote itself. While Johnson has competed in the Indianapolis 500 before, his role will be in a different capacity this time around. Meanwhile, Brady’s star power will attract more viewers, and interest in the racing series will skyrocket because of his stature.

Meanwhile, Kyle Larson will also be attempting another ‘double’ in 2025. The Hendrick Motorsports driver’s ambitions were thwarted last year after rain delayed the Indy 500 and ended the Coca-Cola 600 prematurely at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The 32-year-old will be hoping for more luck this time around, but the priority will be to compete in the Cup Series if things don’t go according to plan. With the new waiver rule in place, Larson won’t risk anything.

Sebastien Bourdais is the smart choice for Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson

Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson seem to know what they’re doing. With both the sporting legends taking over Chip Ganassi’s fourth entry for the race, making the right decisions was key to ensuring their reputation didn’t take a beating in the 200-lap event. Johnson, who has already made an appearance in the Indy 500, would have been the natural choice as a driver, but the 49-year-old seems to be past his prime and not as accustomed to open-wheel racing.

As a result, Brady and Johnson have opted for Sebastien Bourdais. The French driver has a wealth of experience across different motorsports disciplines, having won the Daytona 24 Hours, Le Mans, as well as a 12 Hours of Sebring twice before. If that wasn’t all, he has also made 27 starts in Formula 1, although his focus lately has been primarily on endurance racing.

The 45-year-old has never won the Indy 500 but has finished as high as seventh in 2014 while competing for KV Racing Technology. However, in May 2017, he suffered a horrific crash during qualifying at the Indy500 which caused him multiple fractures. However, by 2018, he made a full recovery and was back at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He even managed to qualify in 5th but could only manage a 28th-place finish on his comeback.

To see Tom Brady and Jimmie Johnson on the sidelines, cheering Bourdais on will be a treat for fans. Both the sporting icons have enough star power to convince not just motorsports enthusiasts to tune into one of the biggest races in the world. IndyCar will want to take advantage of the collaboration in terms of promotional opportunities, which will help them raise the profile of the sport. If the collaboration goes well, could the two team up again? Time will tell.
