Jimmie Johnson is expected to make his grand return to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023. He left the sport at the end of the 2020 season and completed two seasons in IndyCar. Now, the 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is back in the fold once again, and this time in new colors. Speaking of IndyCar, it recently transpired that Kyle Larson has designed to compete in the iconic Indianapolis 500. Since Johnson has experience in the race, he had some good news for the Hendrick Motorsports driver.

Johnson told the media at Phoenix, “I did notice some similarities to the IndyCar. Going back to the sim session I had last week. So thankful for that because you cannot drive these cars sideways as the generation of cars I drove. Due to the sidewall and also the aero properties of the car. So it did all kind of play into what Casey spoke about and it was helpful. Still, and I found this from being in the Garage 56 car here a little bit. IndyCar is so light and so small and such a high-performance vehicle.”

Which races will Jimmie Johnson compete in?

It is already well-established that the ex-Hendrick Motorsports driver will run in the Daytona 500. Aside from that race, he is expected to run in four more races across the season. However, those races have not been officially confirmed just yet, but Johnson is keen to hit the ground running. It is also worth mentioning that he will have a familiar number on his Legacy Motor Club car.

The only difference is that he is running the #84 as opposed to the #48. This is largely because Hendrick Motorsports has the right to use that number for Alex Bowman. Of course, Johnson will be aware that winning could be a tall ask for him, so he will be focused on doing the best he can.
