With ten to go in the second stage of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race in Portland, Jesse Iwuji wrecked Ty Gibbs under caution. The #34 driver ran straight into the Joe Gibbs Racing driver as the #54 followed the safety vehicle.

After the race though, Iwuji issued a public apology on Twitter.

“In regards to the on track incident today, I’ll take full responsibility for the miscommunication that led to this @TyGibbs_ . I apologize 🙏🏾,” he wrote.

Iwuji also added a note in which he explained the circumstances that led him to wreck the 19-year-old.

I want to sincerely apologize to the #54 team for the incident during the caution at Portland. It was not intentional at all,” he wrote.

He explained how a misunderstanding from his radio and race control near Turn 1 rendered him unable to understand why Gibbs was moving to the outside wall. This was something he assumed the JGR driver was doing to give him space to pass, while in reality, he was only doing so “big arc his corner” into the turn and as he did so, Iwuji made contact and collided.

“I got penalized 2 laps and also had to go see the series director after the race. Once again, I apologize for the incident and any issues it caused,” Iwuji added.

Will Ty Gibbs be promoted to the Cup Series in 2023?

In a recent interview, Ty Gibbs spoke about his chances and realistic possibilities of driving in the Next-Gen car next season considering the rumors of his promotion, or at least, part-time starts.

“I haven’t heard anything,” Gibbs said. “I would definitely like to run in the [No.] 18, but they chose somebody different. I don’t really know, I feel like with all this new car and how completely different it is.”

He added that it would be good for him if he gets promoted to the top tier as soon as he is able to. However, the young driver also knows that it’s not him who is making these decisions.

“I’m in Xfinity. I just want to do the best I can and win as much as I can,” Gibbs added.
