In NASCAR, one of the most prestigious races is the Daytona 500. This race marks the official start of the NASCAR Cup Series season. Honestly, it is very difficult to win this race, and not many understand this better than Jeff Gordon.

Recently, he made an appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio to preview the race. The four-time Cup Series champion also talked about his Hendrick Motorsports team and their history with the iconic race. So the pressure will be on the current crop of HMS drivers, i.e., Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and William Byron.

Talking to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, he said, “I won three Daytona 500s. But they were all within the first 10 years of my career of 23 years. I guess 2005 was the last one. So you go through these cycles of when things are coming together. The cars are right and you’re staying out of trouble. The same things apply, they were super hard to win back then.

“It just seems like, right now, we’re in this cycle where we’ve not really been putting ourselves in position. So there’s a lot of effort, energy, and excitement to go down there, for all of us. I know Rick would love to have that too because it does seem like it’s been a while since we’ve pulled it off.”

Can Kyle Larson and his teammates bring back the Daytona 500 trophy?

Truthfully, Gordon has a point, because it has been a while since a Hendrick Motorsports car won the race. The last person to triumph was Dale Earnhardt Jr, all the way back in the 2014 Daytona 500. So far, the team has scored a grand total of eight wins in the race, so they will be eager to add more to the tally.

Now the question is, are Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and William Byron up to the task? Neither of them has ever won the Daytona 500 before, so they all will be keen to be the first to set the ball rolling. It will also be a big boost for Chevrolet, as their last winner was Austin Dillon for Richard Childress Racing in 2018.
