This past Sunday’s rendition of NASCAR’s Cup Series race saw the dawn of a new driver from the Hendrick Motorsports garage. The proud Chevy camp proved once again why it has a reputation for fielding budding talents and reshaping them into some of the best racers around the world.

Following his young gun’s masterclass at “The Glen,” HMS Vice Chairman and NASCAR great Jeff Gordon is ecstatic to see his own driver follow in his footsteps into NASCAR’s halls of glory as the #24 Chevy brings in another win.

Many NASCAR veterans came out and articulated how the impending HMS star has similarities to Jeff Gordon and other NASCAR legends who had more than 5 wins before they entered the playoffs.

“That wave way back when Jeff Gordon was the first”, Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 compared to the team’s VC

The 25-year-old won his first-ever road course in grand fashion, dominating over 60 laps as he outclassed his teammate and HMS road racing sensation, Chase Elliott. While the 2020 Cup Series champion fell victim to bad luck again, Byron was dead focused on his goal, racking up his 5th win—the most by any driver in 2023.

With Gordon’s young gun basking in his glory, NASCAR analysts and enthusiasts quickly acknowledged his rise as they mentioned how the current #24 driver reminded them of a young Gordon in his #24 Chevy as he rose up the ranks. Speaking on NASCAR on NBC, NASCAR great Dale Jarrett mentioned the great Tony Stewart and his own teammate, the once-in-a-generation talent Kyle Larson, and gave props to Byron.

This is kind of opening the door for more opportunities there and as we had that wave way back when Jeff Gordon was the first to come from kind of the open wheel ranks if you will that a lot of owners said you know this is what we have to have then it was Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman.

And that you know it goes on and obviously (Kyle) Larson is a big part of that too and a number of others but I think this might be something that we’re going to see more of,” said the 3-time Daytona winner.

William Byron just became the hottest sensation in NASCAR. Ever since his explosion onto the scene following a successful Xfinity campaign in 2017, where he won his first NASCAR championship, Byron on Sunday once again became a solid championship contender after racking up his 5th win of the season.

In a very short span of time, William Byron has made a mark on NASCAR’s top-tier division, and that too in grand fashion. The youngster who started it all in humble iRacing circles is now a solid championship contender, as he just outclassed the potent road racers to win his first-ever road course at the iconic Watkins Glen track.

Speaking on NASCAR on NBC, joining DJ, Kyle Petty too chimed in with another Jeff Gordon parallel. He said, “Yeah, listen, five wins in a season after we went through last season and we thought we were going to have 36 different winners.

I never thought we would see another season like this from a driver really. I mean, it made me question whether we were going to see five, six, seven wins.”

Petty then went on to say that Byron could have a Jeff Gordon-type season with 5 wins already to his name. He said, “He could have that Kevin Harvick, that Jeff Gordon-type season where you have eight, nine, ten wins by the time we rolled through the playoffs, they’re that type of team.

He and Rudy are that type of group, where they can get hot. They can get cold, and we’ve seen them go cold through the summers the last couple of summers, but they can get hot.”

Now that William Byron is being compared to his VC’s performance and journey, the No. 24 Chevy has definitely made the former stock car racing executive proud.
