Jeff Gordon’s journey with Hendrick Motorsports is a story of legendary success, chance, and a lasting legacy. From 1992 to 2015, he was the face of the team, racking up four NASCAR Cup Series championships and an astounding 93 wins. Those stats alone make him one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history, but that’s not all he had going with the team.

Gordon’s connection to Hendrick Motorsports didn’t end when he stepped away from full-time racing. In a true full-circle moment, he returned to the team in a leadership role and now serves as vice chairman and co-owner, focusing on everything from competition strategy to marketing. His bond with the team remains as strong as ever. It was recently put to a test on the team’s Instagram channel.

Jeff Gordon calls William Byron the lazy one on the team

Jeff Gordon’s rise with Hendrick started with a chance encounter. In 1992, while at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Rick Hendrick happened to notice Gordon’s impressive performance in a Busch Grand National Series race. That was all it took for Hendrick to bring the young driver on board, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now that he has become an integral part of the team, he often jokes around with the team, building a stronger bond together.

Jeff Gordon’s charm didn’t just stop at the racetrack. With his likable personality and crossover appeal, he helped elevate NASCAR’s popularity during the 1990s. His presence extended beyond racing; he even hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ and made appearances in TV shows and movies, so it’s only fair for Hendrick Motorsports to call for his help when it comes to making posts on Instagram. In a recent video on the team’s channel, a question to Gordon put him in a fix.

Captioned, “The art of being fashionably late. Who’s guilty?” The post had Jeff Gordon answer an important question, which could end up with him in trouble. Starting off the clip, Gordon says, “How do I not get myself in trouble? That’s my only thinking.” Then comes the question from the interviewer, who asks him, “Who is most likely to text ‘on my way’ when they’re still sitting at their house?”

Unsure as to how to answer, Gordon asked himself, “Which one of these guys do I call out on this?” After a moment of thought, he replied and said, “I mean, I think they’re all pretty responsible.” However, that did not solve the purpose of the question so that’s when Gordon added, “But yeah, I go with William [Byron]. Sorry, William.” For the video, Gordon jokingly put his successor of the No. 24 car under the bus by taking William Byron‘s name in this situation.  However, judging from his race pace, it’s hard to believe that the 26-year-old driver is late for anything.

William Byron and Co’s place in the 2024 Top 8

William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliott are the remaining HMS drivers that made it into the top 8. After Alex Bowman had a technical disqualification for being underweight, the responsibility has come down to these three drivers to fight for the championship. The Las Vegas race was quite a show, and William Byron was locked in. Although he did not win the race, he came in 4th and won some serious points for himself in the playoffs.

Alex Bowman came in 5th, but that is not as important now as he missed out on the top 8. Kyle Larson is still the leading Hendrick driver who is currently third in the playoff standings, just a position better than Byron. Chase Elliott, on the other hand, still had his work cut out for him. The No. 9 driver is currently 53 points under the cutoff, and for him to make it into the finals, he will need to win a race or deliver serious results in the last 2 races before the finals.

Before the playoffs started, Rick Hendrick’s wife Linda had made the drivers promise to all make it into the top 4, and now that Bowman is out and Joey Logano already has a spot in the finals, will the remaining 3 drivers keep their word to Mrs. Hendrick? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
