“It’s Less of a Skill Game” – After Criticizing Bubba Wallace, Denny Hamlin Offers Dale Earnhardt Jr and Tony Stewart-Inspired Advice to Reduce Life-Threatening Wrecks

Did Bubba Wallace lack the skills to clinch Talladega this year? Or was it more of a judgment game rather than a skill game? During Sunday’s GEICO 500, a last-lap wreck spun Bubba Wallace out while he was leading the pack. In #23’s attempt to block Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney from overtaking his vehicle, the two drivers made contact, ending Wallace’s race in the most frustrating manner.

Since then, many, including Wallace’s team owner Denny Hamlin started sharing their views on the incident. In one of the recent episodes of his podcast Actions Detrimental, the 23XI Racing co-owner discussed how Wallace made a bad decision during the last lap of the race. Furthermore, he shared what Wallace should have actually done instead of attempting multiple blocks at such a crucial stage of his run.

While discussing Wallace’s actions during Sunday’s race, Actions Detrimental co-host Jared Allen asked Denny Hamlin, “At what point in your career did that switch flip for you where you are thinking, ‘Okay! I don’t need to make that block’?”

To this, Hamlin replied, “Well, it changed probably…I am gonna get the timeline wrong…but probably six or seven years ago. When NASCAR put big a** spoilers on our Superspeedway car. So, from (around) 2006 to 2012, the cars had a lot less drag. Less drag and less horsepower – which is why you saw a big bubble effect. Which I think we need to start to get back to. Because these cars are so planted to the race track, we’re running into each other so hard that wrecks are inevitable.”

Furthermore, the 23XI Racing co-owner clarified that he didn’t think wrecks were bad. However, he added, “I am not saying wrecks are a bad thing but it makes it less of a skill game. You saw Dale (Earnhardt) Jr…Tony Stewart back in the day. They were so good at working the lines and really manipulating the competition around them’s air to make their car go forward.”

While discussing how the races have changed over the years, Hamlin explained that wrecks have become an integral part of the sport. Sharing why he feels that way, he said, “Now, we’re just whoever can hit the car in front of them the hardest to move that line forward is what you find is successful one. That’s, I don’t know…it’s not as much of a skill game because of that.”

Furthermore, he added that due to less drag, it was quite difficult for drivers to build back the momentum in the earlier days.

However, despite his comments against drivers wrecking each other, Hamlin empathized with Ryan Blaney. Admitting that the #12 had no other choice, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver revealed that he felt bad for Wallace but did not blame any of it on Blaney.
