Chase Elliott entered the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series as the defending champion. Now that he has qualified for the playoffs, he has the task of trying to successfully defend his crown, something that not many have achieved. Recently, the Hendrick Motorsports driver spoke about the daunting task ahead of him.
He said, “It’s always hard to do, it’s not like it gets any easier. I definitely feel like I have a lot of confidence in our team. Our group really works well together and I feel like we do a good job. Alan [Gustafson] does a great job of kind of leading this example of just driving away on a very even playing field. Not getting too up on a good day and not too down on a bad day.”
Elliott admitted that he feels that this season is no different from previous seasons. While he likes experiencing some of the tough situations, he knows that the important thing is to enjoy big moments. As long as he and Hendrick Motorsport accomplish it together, they can contend with anyone.

The #9 driver also praised Gustafson for performing such a great job. He acknowledged that the crew chief is vastly experienced, especially during the big stages. So, having someone of Gustafson’s caliber on his side was quite beneficial. In fact, the crew chief helps take things to the next level.
All praise aside, Chase Elliott will have to put the hammer down in order to make a serious bid for the title. However, he knows that his rivals won’t be sitting idle, especially his teammate Kyle Larson. The latter is already considered as one of the favorites this season, as he has been in top form. Additionally, Ryan Blaney is another driver who has been on song for the past couple of races and is eyeing a hat-trick of wins.
