Racing full-time in the Cup Series since 2005, Kyle Busch has amassed tons of experience and knowledge. Starting out as a brash young driver in his rookie season, over the years Rowdy has turned into one of the most insightful and analytical drivers to grace NASCAR tracks. Applying the knowledge he had gained over the years, Busch bagged his first Cup Series championship in 2015, ten years after his full-time debut. Now driving the #8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, Kyle Busch’s crew chief, Randall Burnett has revealed what separates Kyle Busch from the horde of NASCAR drivers.
Speaking on the MRN Crew Call podcast, Randall Burnett said, “He’s really pushed us to be better, and honestly that’s kind of what we needed up here. We needed some, you know, little bit leadership to help us with some of that stuff and then a new way of looking at things, and he’s brought a lot of that to the table. So, I feel like he’s elevated our game for sure. He’s certainly kept me on my toes. But I think it’s been good, I think our communication’s good. I feel like we get along pretty well, and I feel he believes in what we are doing.”
The crew chief was questioned by the podcast host, Steve Post, who asked, what else did Kyle Busch bring to the table that put him on the elite list of the top-5 or top-3 drivers. “It’s just the way his mind works. It’s really funny. He’s always racing, like he’s always thinking about how to make something better, how we can be more efficient in doing some things,” Brunett responded to Steve Post’s question.
Revealing Rowdy’s rare abilities, the crew chief added, “He’ll text me at 9-10 o’clock at night, ‘Hey, what about this?’ or ‘Hey, what about that?’ You know what I mean? It’s all the time with him. He gets something in his mind and he starts communicating about it, doesn’t really matter what time of night it is. We talk about it and try to make things better. It’s nice to have somebody with that kind of experience, that kind of success saying, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about this?’ or ‘Hey, have you ever thought about that?’ It’s nice, it’s refreshing and I think it helps us a lot.”
Just 36 points behind the Cup Series points leader William Byron, Kyle Busch has cemented his place as a 2023 championship favorite.
