It is well established that the fire retardant suits used by drivers in NASCAR and several other forms of motorsports are supposed to provide superior aversion from serious injury. However, after Kevin Harvick’s car caught fire during the race at Darlington last weekend, his crew chief took to demonstrating how good insulation should protect against fire via an Instagram video he posted recently to prove the point further.

In the video, a piece of fire-insulating fabric was placed on the tarmac with some rubber on top of it. Rodney Childers appears to be using a blow torch to set the rubber ablaze, which keeps burning, then he slowly moves his torch to the fabric directly, which seems to light up to a point of ignition.

NASCAR Fans react to the video posted by Rodney Childers

NASCAR fans saw this as a failure of NASCAR to implement well-tested safety solutions. Some seemed to take this up to NASCAR not being able to provide good insulation while others appreciated the demonstration provided by the Stewart-Haas Racing’s Crew Chief.

The fans commented, “And yet NASCAR doesn’t seem to grasp this.”

Love to see Rodney going at NASCAR. It’s a shame it’s probably wasted effort.”

Looks like more shrouding is needed to prevent rubber from getting anywhere close to the hot exhaust or any other ignition source.”

In one instance even Kyle Petty responded by stating, “Great visual.”
