Can Justin Allgaier finally clinch the elusive Xfinity title, or will history repeat itself again?

Justin Allgaier has been there and done that. The veteran is the only racing driver to have qualified for all nine Xfinity Series playoffs since the format was introduced in 2016. However, the championship has eluded the Illinois native so far, and he is hoping to finally break that winless streak this year. With four races to go, Allgaier finds himself at the top of the driver standings after a seventh-place finish at the Charlotte Roval, which was his best result in the postseason so far.

JR Motorsports has plenty to be optimistic about going into the Round of Eight. Despite their struggles, Dale Earnhardt Jr’s side has all three full-time drivers in contention for the title as the team looks to secure their first championship since 2018.

Tensions were high in the final Round of 12 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The weeks approaching the race had arguably been the worst for Justin Allgaier in his long and relatively successful Xfinity Series career. Having finished not higher than 25th in the opening three playoff races, the veteran was at serious risk of seeing his title hopes end after being 18 points below the elimination cutline. To make matters worse, Sam Mayer was disqualified at Talladega Superspeedway, after his No. 1 Chevy failed post-race inspection. With results crucial for Junior’s team, both their drivers delivered a clutch performance just when all hope was lost.

As for Justin Allgaier, the 38-year-old’s seventh-place result puts him in an enviable position going into the business end of the season. Reflecting on the result in the pre-race press conference, the Illinois native said, “To have Charlotte go the way it did, to go two-in-two, have three total, and then reset as a points leader, you’re just like, ‘I think it’s a dream I’m ready for. I’m ready to wake up’ and that not be the case but at the same time, it’s been a rough stretch of six to eight weeks before Charlotte. Not that Charlotte was great, but Charlotte was a great example of execution, right?”

Going into the race, Justin Allgaier knew that the outcome at the ‘Roval’ could make or break his season. He qualified for the race in ninth place and steadily climbed up the grid in the opening 20 laps, finishing third at the end of Stage 1. With momentum on his side, the No. 7 Chevy driver built on his early race performance to clinch Stage 2, while his teammates Connor Mosack and Sam Mayer occupied the second and third place respectively. Despite dropping off in the closing laps, Allgaier had a four-point cushion when the checkered flag was waved at the 2.32-mile road course, prompting Dale Jr to breathe a sigh of relief.

As for Sam Mayer, the youngster couldn’t have hoped for a better result at the hybrid road course. While lady luck played an important role in denying Parker Kligerman a well-deserved victory because of a late caution, the Wisconsin native wasn’t complaining about the outcome. Elated at the result, Mayer gave credit to the JR Motorsports team by saying, “Huge thanks to each and every one of you in this shop to have the opportunity to go out there and now race for a championship or at least one step closer.”

Despite the memorable win, the result left a bittersweet taste in Dale Earnhardt Jr’s mouth. Acknowledging Parker Kligerman’s heartbreak, the veteran racing driver went on to say, “It just sucks for Parker because he has absolutely worked hard enough and run well enough to deserve to know what it feels like to stand in that Victory Lane and celebrate.” With the Round of Eight on the horizon, JR Motorsports has work to do in the upcoming fixtures. Even though Justin Allgaier is relatively comfortable in the standings, Sam Mayer and Sammy Smith are below the elimination cutline going into the business end of the season. Both drivers will need to improve their performances if they want to have a shot at the title at Phoenix Raceway later this year.

It seems like things are finally looking up for JR Motorsports. Junior’s team has officially announced that Roto-Rooter will be returning as the team’s primary sponsor for the 2025 season. The plumbing and drain cleaning company will be partnering with Connor Zilisch and Carson Kvapil for two Xfinity Series races next year and will be a full-season associate sponsor for JR Motorsports’ late model program as well.

Welcoming Roto-Rooter back as a sponsor for next year, JR Motorsports CEO Kelley Earnhardt Miller said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Roto-Rooter back to JRM in 2025. It’s great to see how much our partnership has grown already in the short time that we’ve been together and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.” As with any healthy partnership, Roto-Rooter President Thad Reinhard was equally thrilled at the contract extension, going on to say, “Roto-Rooter is grateful to be associated with JR Motorsports for another year.

It seems like JR Motorsports fans wouldn’t have to wait an entire year to see this association take fruition. Roto-Rooter will be partnering with Connor Zilisch and his No. 88 Chevy for his first appearance at Homestead-Miami in the penultimate Round of 8 race of the season. Widely considered to be one of NASCAR’s hottest prospects, the 18-year-old has already secured a victory on his debut at Watkins Glen International and a fourth-place finish at Kansas Speedway. Could he give Justin Allgaier a run for his money at the 2024 Commander Boats 300? Time will tell.
