So far, 2023 has been a jittery affair for two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch and Richard Childress Racing. While the “Rowdy” has redeemed himself of last year’s misery with three stellar wins this season, his RCR #8 Chevy still needs tweaks, as the community saw the team’s weakness with the short-track package.

As NASCAR heads to Richmond for this week’s Cup Series action, its bad boy gets candid about his team’s strategy heading into the 0.75-mile Virginia short track. Despite struggling to hold traction with its rear side often getting loose along with their poor short-track equipment, “Rowdy” Busch is confident of having a major turnaround, mentioning the trick they have up their sleeve, adopting a cut-and-try concept.

It’s going to be hit or miss for “bad boy” Kyle Busch and RCR as they are looking for a massive turnaround following the miserable outing at New Hampshire. Crayon 301 was more like a triple threat matchup for the Rowdy,” as he spun out of control during practice, qualifying, and the race, essentially ending his day and dropping him from 3rd to 5th after the race, exposing the team’s soft underbelly.

Despite his chariot being unable to stay on course as it kept getting loose and sliding all over the place, RCR was forced to enter the race, which then ended awfully for the driver as he rammed into the wall off of turn 4 in Stage 1, bringing him his 4th DNF of the season. Speaking to the media ahead of his anticipated Richmond race, Busch teased a new concept in the making, mentioning it as the last ray of hope.

During the pre-race press conference, Busch was asked about how receptive the team was to his suggestion given their evident weakness with the short-track package.

To which the #8 driver said, “Yeah, I mean we’ve been talking about it nonstop, day in and day out – trying to figure out what it is that we need to do to get better to go faster at the short-tracks. This weekend will be another one of those tests, just being at a short track here and trying to figure it out. There’s really not a whole lot of short-tracks left for the remainder of the year.”

With 2 more short tracks left on the schedule, Busch also reflected on his precarious situation, saying, “You’ve got Martinsville (Speedway) and Phoenix (Raceway) I think, so this is kind of your last test before knowing that you better be ready for the Championship Four and having a good shot for a title run.” He then mentioned the trick Richard Childress and crew have up their sleeve.

He said, “Yeah, we’ve completely thrown a whole new idea and concept out there this week, so we’ll see.” However, when asked whether the changes were adequate and if he was confident about the changes, he simply said, “I should be because it’s a damn copy and paste from somebody else that was really fast here in the spring, so if it doesn’t work, we’ve got bigger issues.”

The Superstar Racing Experience, aka the Camping World SRX Series, has captured the community’s attention in a short span of time. Brainchild of NASCAR legend Tony “Smoke” Stewart, the promotion has been garnering quite the support from die-hard traditionalists and dirt fanatics. The short and peculiar format of the series, along with its star-studded driver line-up, including Stewart himself and old-timer Bobby Labonte, makes it stand out from the rest.

With Busch making his debut this past Friday at Pulaski County Track, the scene was set for an epic showdown. While sprint-style racing and short tracks demand drivers to be quick on their feet with lightning-quick decisions and strategies, Busch wasted no time as the green flag dropped, prancing into action.

Ahead of his Richmond run, Busch in his #51 car held off Clint Bowyer and Stewart himself to finish the 100-lap race 0.637 seconds before Bowyer to become the 4th driver on the promotion to win their first-ever race. Speaking in the post-race interview, he said, “It’s fun. This is just a great atmosphere and environment to just be around. It’s really cool, there are some great race car drivers and great personalities, too. I love being able to race, you know? I’d race more if I could, but there’s only so much you can get in and so much you can do.”
