Controversy has once again plagued Martinsville! And this time, it is teammates who are battling it out on and off the track. It’s almost like Martinsville has made a reputation for giving viewers last-minute panic! Last year, it was Ross Chastain’s ‘Hail Melon’ and this year, it is infighting within Richard Childress Racing’s Xfinity series drivers. In a surprising turn of events, the friction between the teammates didn’t turn out well for either of them. While that ought to be frustrating for the RCR owner, one man seemed extremely satisfied with how things turned out.
It was a good day for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Not only did the JR Motorsports owner see his driver clinch victory at Martinsville, but his team also succeeded in reaching the coveted last spot in the Top 4. However, what happened between RCR teammates Sheldon Creed and Austin Hill has left everyone scratching their heads.
Towards the end of the race, the final spot in the championship race was up for grabs. The three contenders were Austin Hill, Sheldon Creed of RCR, and Justin Allgaier of JR Motorsports. It seemed like Hill and Creed would be the ones to fight for the win. However, the #2 driver’s aggression cost his teammate dearly, who spun right before the checkered flag. Amidst all the chaos, Justin Allgaier took advantage of the situation and snatched the victory from right under Richard Childress’ nose.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is happy to be on the good end of controversy!
The legendary team owner of RCR was left fuming after how things had turned out. Austin Hill was a man who was already in the top 4 going into the race. But Sheldon’s Creed aggressive driving style ultimately cost him the playoff spot. To make matters worse, Creed himself couldn’t get the job done after causing the whole incident.
Childress did not hold back with how things unfolded and who can blame him? He lashed out at Sheldon Creed after the race. “I’ve had drivers drive for me before but nobody as stupid as Sheldon Creed. You don’t do that as a team player. What else do you want me to tell you?”
While things have turned messy for RCR, the JRM owner Dale Earnhardt Jr seemed happy with the RCR implosion. After all, it was his driver who managed to clinch an unlikely final 4 spot. In the post-race press conference, Junior, while admitting his own team’s shortcomings, expressed appreciation for the result.
“Well, we’re thankful, that was a wild finish. Justin didn’t have a good enough car to outrun them guys but it all, you know, got messy at the end and we come out on the good end of it and when those things happen, there will be a lot of people that are unhappy or one guy that is or maybe two but…and we’ve been on both ends of it,” the JRM team owner said.
“I don’t know if you can do anything to avoid having those types of finishes when there’s so much at stake and everybody’s within reach of each other physically on the race track. It worked as designed in terms of creating a lot of drama and conversation around what happened on the race track,” he added.
All this drama was due to one man who won’t even be at Richard Childress Racing next year. For Sheldon Creed, it was nothing more than a race he wanted to win. He won’t be on the team next year so why should he even worry about teamwork, one might argue. The driver of the #2 made his thoughts crystal clear after the end of the event.

A video had emerged on social media of RCR VP Andy Petree charging at an exhausted Sheldon Creed and screaming in his face. Obviously, he was unhappy with how things turned out. The outgoing driver simply did not care and did not display a shred of regret when asked to comment on the matter.
“(Andy Petree) was just mad at how I raced to 21, but, roles reversed, they don’t say anything. Probably part of the reason that I’m leaving. Obviously, they’re going to be mad. I felt like I got him up off the bottom and I gave him a chance to finish second or third, and they all just drive into him at the end, the 20 got him,” the #2 driver said.

With just one race left in his time with Richard Childress Racing, there is no reason for Sheldon Creed to worry about his teammates. Soon, he will be out of this mess and it is highly unlikely that it’s going to be an amicable split after Saturday’s incidents.
