The Daytona 500 is an absolutely momentous racing event in NASCAR and has always been since 1959. The race has been held in the highest regard amongst the fans and the drivers as well. Winning at this event has often given the drivers bragging rights due to just how prestigious this event really is.

However, according to NASCAR driver and host of one of the most popular motorsports podcasts, Corey LaJoie, winning at this grand event is all about luck.

During a recent episode of the “Stacking Pennies with Corey LaJoie” podcast, he explained his reasoning by using Hendrick Motorsports‘ example.

What did Corey LaJoie say?

Mentioning HMS’s Alex Bowman, LaJoie said, “I happen to see Alex Bowman who’s going for his sixth straight front-row start in the 500. Like Alex, you’re obviously pretty good at this. Even though takes literally zero driving talent.

“Not like 1% like zero. It really truly is about how trimmed out your car is and how much how many horses are hooked up to the front of the thing to make it grip to the wind.”

That is a pretty bold statement, to be honest, but nonetheless, it might have some truth value. Historically, there have been several great drivers who have won several championships. However, they have not been able to win the Daytona 500 even after multiple attempts.

One of the most famous examples of legendary drivers who took the longest to win the Daytona 500 was none other than Dale Earnhardt Sr. The intimidator spent several years to achieve his goal of winning the race. However, it was only after 19 failed attempts that was he able to get to the chequered flag during the 1998 season.

Across the history of the sport, there has only been one person who won this race on their very first attempt. That was none other than Lee Petty. Meanwhile, aside from the drivers who have been able to win it, there are quite a few on the current grid, who still haven’t been able to do so.

One such driver is Kyle Busch. Despite having two championships to his name, Rowdy has still not been able to conquer the Daytona 500. However, since he still has time in the sport, there is a chance of him pulling off a Dale Earnhardt Sr in the future.
