Joey Logano has been a fantastic talent throughout his career in NASCAR. He walked into the sport while still a young gun. Not many remember that he is the youngest driver ever to win in Cup Series—achieving the feat in 2009 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Since then, he has gone on to amass 31 wins and two Cup series championships.

Logano has time and again proved his mettle as a force to be reckoned with. And it seems that he hasn’t had to work really hard for it either—at least during the early part of his career. He said as much in a recent interview.

During a recent interview with Graham Bensinger, Logano said, “I didn’t work on my craft till I was 19 years old. I didn’t study anything. I didn’t go through my own races. I didn’t. I was just fast and I won.

“Like, it literally was too easy for me that I wasn’t learning valuable lessons to make me good when I got there.”

The Team Penske driver had initially begun his career with Joe Gibbs Racing. He even claims to have grown up in the JGR garage, mostly because he spent his teenage years racing for the team across various levels. However, after just four seasons with the team, Logano faced the sharp edge of the sword and was let go from a team he considered as family.

It surely was a devastating time for him. But as luck would have it, he would find himself a new home with Team Penske.

In 2012, Joey Logano was at a crossroads in his career. He had spent four seasons driving in Cup Series for JGR. However, his results had been fairly inconsistent. He had shown flashes of brilliance, winning two races in 2012 and making the playoffs. But he had also struggled at times, finishing outside the top 20 in nearly a third of the season’s races.

Despite Logano’s potential, JGR made the controversial decision to let him go at the end of the season. The official reason given was that the team could not afford to keep all three of its star drivers—Logano, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin. Therefore, they had chosen to invest in the latter two. However, there were rumors that Logano’s departure was also due to personality conflicts and a lack of chemistry with his teammates.
