Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Pocono Raceway saw quite a flurry of events. RCR’s Austin Hill, who only made his Xfinity Series debut in 2019, bagged the win on Saturday. But his win left many confused in its wake, mainly with JRM teammates Sam Mayer and Josh Berry.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr’s racing team has not been performing the best at the Xfinity Series this season. However, fans were placing all their bets on Berry this Saturday as his #8 Chevy led 51 laps. But JR Motorsports gets dogged by bad luck once again. Far from winning, they were in for a big disappointment.

Josh stumbled onto a wreck that led him to finish 24th on Saturday.  The crash left the JR Motorsports racers in quite a turmoil as they got to the bottom of the causality of things once the race was over.

Dale Earnhardt Jr’s team’s Sam Mayer in dismay about the crash

It wasn’t until overtime that Austin’s #21 would take on the lead from Josh Berry. The last extra lap saw Berry make a determined effort to move ahead when his rear bumper got hit by Austin Hill’s #21 car. The shove disoriented Berry’s car enough to make it go out of the groove, and things just went downhill from there.

Berry’s teammate Sam Mayer was under the impression that he was to blame for the crash that cost Berry his desperately needed win. In an interview with Frontstretch, Mayer opened up about how he saw the crash.

“They’re trying to win a race. It sucks it’s a teammate, of course, and he’s backward in the fence, and I feel really bad because, I mean, I put my car there and risked that and didn’t even think about the outcome,” started the runner-up for Saturday’s race. The restart for the final lap was where Berry crashed into #21, where Hill claimed to be just trying to keep in his line.

Sam Mayer, however, is in quite a dismayed state given the fact that JR Motorsports missed out on a potential win.

It sucks for this organization. I mean, our Xcelerate Camaro was really really fast today. I was super, super proud of staying in the game with all the damage that we have and the crazy cr*p that happened today. But it is tough to watch that. It just sucks because I think I caused that and I probably did,” concluded Mayer. This was yet another tough blow that Dale Earnhardt Jr’s team had to take this season.

Josh Berry has had zero wins this season. It was perhaps the drive to win at least this race that led him to rage ahead at the last extended lap of the race. However, not only did that backfire and he lost, but he also made contact with his teammate Sam Mayer’s car.

This led him to lose control of his car and drive into a wall, thus ending up with his right tire cut and a messed up front. However, he made it pretty clear that none of the incidents that ensued were Sam’s fault. After being discharged from the infield care center, Berry ensured that Sam was definitely not to blame for the contact, and it was all part of some hard racing.

Hard racing or not, the checkered flag slipped Berry’s hands this time too. Berry, who is set to replace Kevin Harvick post his retirement, has had 5 top-5 finishes this season, so all hope is not gone. Both Mayer and Berry really need to step up their game if JR Motorsports is to get any good news this season.
