Did Kyle Larson's win over Ryan Blaney feel like a robbery to anyone else?

Ryan Blaney couldn’t do what he promised! He promised that if he won at the Brickyard 400, he would add his own spin to the age-old tradition of kissing the “yard of bricks” — he would lick it, he said. Well, lady luck wasn’t by his side.

Going into the race, he seemed to have a great chance, among the favorites, to win. Throughout the race, he had everything planned out perfectly, and the win almost seemed within his grasp. But such is NASCAR – not everything can be planned, and not everything goes according to plan. So, even though he was in the best fuel position in the end, “dumb luck” ruined his chance at winning. And he wasn’t happy.

Ryan Blaney’s hope was dashed by late-race chaos!

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a track everyone wants to win. It’s an iconic track that many in the world of motorsport call home. Ryan Blaney, who comes from a racing family too, had the same goal- to win at Indianapolis. He said, “Kissing the bricks is like a dream come true. Ask anybody; that’s what they wanna do. I’m gonna lick the bricks if I win, that’s for sure. It’s gonna be nasty, but it’s gonna happen. That’s just what everyone wants to do.”

And he did come very close to winning it, too. He was lingering around the top 10 for the entire time. But alas, Ryan Blaney found himself caught in a three-way battle for the win against Larson and Brad Keselowski. However, just as this was unfolding, Busch collided, and a caution was called. Keselowski then ran out of fuel and had to pit. Larson got the chance to restart right next to Blaney. And that was what changed everything – Larson won! He had overtaken Blaney in the second overtime and won the race. This was the HMS driver’s first-ever win in Indianapolis. Surely this will make up for the “double” attempt he wasn’t able to achieve earlier this year at Indy.

However, Blaney was more than disappointed and he expressed his displeasure post-race. Ryan Blaney told Fronstretch,The 6 was going to run out if it went green. We had a lead, and I was going to pull away from the 5. I chose the top on the restart because I couldn’t believe the 6 stayed out. He pitted eight laps before us. We were tight; there’s no way he’s making it. He stays out, I choose the top, he’s going to run out in the restart zone, and I’m going to get the lead. He runs out, pulls in, and Larson gets promoted to the bottom, and the race is over. The only reason we kept the top 6 was because of gas.”

Having missed a golden opportunity of winning, he added,I’m just disappointed; that just stinks. It’s dumb. We should have won. Larson got a pretty good break.” However, while his replies here seem like he is disappointed and not so mad, his radio message paints an entirely different picture.

Did Kyle Larson's win over Ryan Blaney feel like a robbery to anyone else?

Have an interesting take?

Ryan Blaney didn’t agree with NASCAR’s decision to show the green flag and continue with the race, which ultimately gave Larson the chance to restart next to him. And Blaney was mad and hauled harsh remarks on the radio. He said, “There’s no way they should’ve let that go green. That’s ridiculous. They just GAVE it to him (Kyle Larson). It’s f*cking over, I’m on the top. I ain’t gonna win from the top. Gave it to f*cking golden boy. Son of a b*tch.”

Yet, after the race, he cooled down a bit and changed his standing. He said that he doesn’t know whom to blame because it just seems like poor race luck. He said, “We put ourselves in the perfect spot to win, and that weird circumstance benefited him [ Larson] and just killed our chance to win. That’s what I’m upset about. I’m not mad at anybody; it’s just tough luck. Well, anyone would be upset about getting so close to the win yet not achieving it and when the track is as iconic as Indianapolis, the pain is even greater.

And then, he threw some shade at Keselowski for waiting too long to make a move when they were almost out of fuel. He said, “We saved gas initially, then we had a caution, the 6 knew they weren’t gonna make it and I got screwed on the lineup and they gifted it to the 5, so I’m happy that it worked out for them.”

Blaney ended up in the third position behind Larson and Reddick. And Larson snatched his fourth win this season!
