With the first race of the 2023 season playoff’s second stage behind us, the fresh week brings us to the tables and mics again. Joe Gibbs Racing’s star driver Denny Hamlin had pulled off a commendable performance with a P5 finish after recovering from an early crash with teammate Ty Gibbs.

Coming back from Texas, he got to his studio once again along with friend Jared Allen to broadcast another episode of ‘Action Detrimentals with Denny Hamlin’. As they discussed the race and what the future held for the newly crowned “villain of NASCAR”, one off-track topic caught the attention of listeners.

Denny Hamlin has been one of the most polarizing figures in racing over the last few weeks. His antics on the track to win races by pushing out fellow contenders and not feeling remorseful about it have not earned the pleasure of fans. But he continues to not care for the sentiment against him and expresses his views without consequences in mind. The latest of a long line of such solid attitude displays was found in his words about his experience at the recent Drake concert. Talking to his co-host Jared Allen about it, he narrated how his daughter Taylor had been extremely excited when he’d told her that he was going to Drake’s.

Revealing that she’d wanted to come along with him, he said, “We got the tickets, it was a good concert. As soon as I told Taylor I was going to Drake’s she was jumping up ‘Oh my god, Oh my god, I wanna go, I wanna go!”. Denny’s first thought at this daughter’s excitement had been the expectation that the concert might not be appropriate for children to attend. And he was proved right by the end of the night. He said, “And I am just thinking ‘It is probably not appropriate’. And after the concert, I am like, ‘Phew! Thank god! It is NOT appropriate for children.”

The presence of Joe Gibbs’ star at the concert had been widely publicised courtesy of one fan who’d spotted him outside the arena in his Cadillac and taken a picture of him. Denny did not fail to acknowledge the fan’s pleasant character before getting into what it was that made the concert particularly appalling for children.

With over 700 concerts to date, Drake has created a great legacy for himself in the music world. Earlier this year, he’d become the first rapper in American history to bring in a revenue of over $5 million in a single concert. With such fame and popularity, the age of his fan following could vary wildly. And in the high-energy environment of music concerts, fans could be as ungirdled as they can be. That’s what was in store for Denny Hamlin to experience, too.

Taking the example of a grandmother and grandson duo who’d come to watch Drake he said, “But we did have I mean… No. 1 gold star grandmother who took her grandson, she was probably 75 and he was maybe 14. Like two rows back and she sat through the whole concert. She was on her phone because.. good thing because, there were some inappropriate floaties going through the arena, very inappropriate floaties.”

Despite being glad that he had not taken his daughter Taylor to the concert, the racer himself had a good time. Understanding that Drake ‘plays to the woman’, he said, “Drake does what he does. He is playing to the woman. It is a very good show for sure. I enjoyed it, he is one of my favourites.” Denny has often displayed on his social media handle the love that he shares for his daughters Taylor and Molly. The string of events that led to him not taking the Hamlin household to Drake’s concert underlines that character further.
