During the NASCAR Cup race at the Indianapolis road course, there were a few hairy moments. Among them were incidents for Joey Logano and Chris Buescher, where their cars caught fire briefly.
Often, this happens because the exhaust has a tendency to get bent and that sometimes triggered the fire. Now, NASCAR has introduced a new exhaust shroud to hopefully decrease the chances of a fire.
Suffice to say, Logano and Buescher supported the move whole-heartedly.

Logano said, “It can’t hurt, right? It seems like it is the right direction to try to keep the fire from coming inside the car. Really it’s to keep the foam from catching fire, the body from catching fire.”
“I think it’s fixed, we’ll have to see. There’s probably some more things we should look into with the car being flammable in those areas. But I think that’s the quick, fairly easy fix that everyone can put on their car.”
“Pretty quick, easy fix, glad they did something quickly. Thumbs up in my book so far. Let’s see, time will tell.”
“If you see another car catch on fire, you’ll know it didn’t work.”
Chris Buescher agreed with fellow Ford driver Joey Logano
Even Buescher admitted that it was a significant change. This was a subject that he and the Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing team had often discussed in the past. So he definitely appreciated the rapid action taken to alleviate the problems.

Buescher observed that the change needn’t be a big one, but just required a few small tweaks. Hopefully, the new exhaust shroud will be the solution that NASCAR needs to ensure driver safety.
For now, both drivers will be hoping that there are no more gremlins with the Next Gen cars. After all, these cars have yet to complete a full season in the NASCAR Cup Series.

On the bright side, there seem to be far fewer problems than there used to be in the early races.
