The Playoffs season of the NASCAR Cup Series is already knocking on the doors with just five races left in the calendar of the regular season. There is no doubt that the battle has surely intensified among the drivers as well as the teams prying for the championship both in the regular season as well as the playoffs.

And not to deny the earnest rivalry between Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing as the points standings are in a continual shift between William Byron and Martin Truex Jr. However, for a majority of NASCAR fans as well as teams, it is the playoffs that hold a pivotal position rather than the regular season itself, although it acts as a gateway to the final championship races.

Nevertheless, it is not just the fans that are to be blamed for the popularity of the playoffs over the regular, as the veteran spotters of NASCAR seem to have unearthed the root of the problem.

NASCAR Insider heaves his disappointment for the low popularity of the regular-season of NASCAR

The concept of the Playoffs was introduced in NASCAR back in 2004 and has continued since then, but a major shift occurred in 2014 when the governing body introduced various stages bearing semblance to other major sports formats like the NBA and NFL before the drivers were crowned with titles.

However, the road to the playoffs is a tedious one and a novelty for many contemporary NASCAR fans, and besides, the transferring of points from one round to the other is nothing less than rocket science for many. While the points from the regular season are a deciding factor for the drivers to enter the post-season, for fans it is like taking the long road and stretching the season.

Nonetheless, it is not just the fans who are to be blamed for the less popularity of the regular season. Bubba Wallace’s spotter, Freddie Kraft, said, “I don’t think enough effort is played into it from a media standpoint. That’s a big deal […] that’s a five-point difference from first to second.” He gave this take in the latest episode of the ‘Door Bumper Clear’ podcast.

To this veteran spotter, Brett Griffin asserted, “We know that Martin Truex Jr or William Byron at this point appear to be one of them is going to get five more playoff points. That is massive. Like if our fans are truly don’t care about it we are doing something wrong as a sport because this thing is super important. It’s not a home-field advantage, NFL playoffs, but it’s pretty damn close.”

“It’s unbelievable, it’s a buffer,” Kraft added.

So clearly, if NASCAR is failing to put emphasis on the regular season, they are not doing justice to the battle that the two giants of the sports, HMS and JGR, find themselves in.

The strongest competitors in the season so far, Martin Truex Jr and William Byron, seemed to be engaged in a tug-of-war, in order to clinch the championship for the regular season. The leads in the points standings are in a continual shift between the two-star drivers.

Even the drivers are in acceptance of the rivalry that is ensuing between the two camps. As per ESPN, Martin Truex Jr, after his empathic win in New Hampshire, expressed, We need to be upfront. They’re going to be, and they’re going to be challenging for wins, so we need to do the same and I know we can do it.”

On the other front, Byron exclaimed ahead of the Pocono race, “We’re feeling really great about where we’re at as a team right now and what we’ve been able to do pretty much everywhere we go. Had a lot of speed today and that’s always a great feeling when you come here.”

Although both the drivers were eluded of a victory at Pocono, they are ready to channel their driving prowess in order to claim a title to their name, a maiden one for William Byron and a second for Martin Truex Jr. Nevertheless, with the next race at Richmond, it is to be seen how these drivers fare at Federated Auto Parts 400.
