Charles Red Farmer’s name is usually related to late models, but the NASCAR legend has a strong affinity for stock car racing. It’s not surprising to see the 91-year-old at Cup Series events, and the community was expecting to see him this month at the Daytona 500 as well. However, according to recent developments, Charles Red Farmer will not be able to make it to The Great American Race after he recently suffered from a serious health scare.

Red Farmer has won several titles in NASCAR, but not in the competitions fans are used to seeing today. He is a three-time champion of the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Division and the 1956 champion of the NASCAR Winston Modified Tour. He is also part of the group of drivers who operated from Hueytow, Alabama, known as the Alabama Gang.

NASCAR insider Eddie Roche shared the news on Facebook. He revealed that the multi-time Late Model champion suffered a stroke and will enjoy the Daytona 500 from the comfort of his home as he recovers. “Sadly, Red Farmer just called me to inform that he suffered a stroke Wed eve. He will be unable to come to Daytona. He is now resting at home,” the Facebook post read.

At 91, a health scare like this can make a lot of people panic, but Red Farmer has been in situations seemingly worse than this. He was one of the passengers in the helicopter crash that killed Davey Allison at the Talladega Superspeedway. The NASCAR Hall of Famer had suffered a broken collarbone and broken ribs in what was perhaps one of the most traumatic instances of his life.

To add to this, Red Farmer still remembers what it was like to be in the helicopter moments before disaster struck. As per a report by CBS last year, the 91-year-old described what it was like and how Davey Allison died trying to make the helicopter fly until his last moment. While Daytona will surely miss his presence, to cheer Red Farmer, his fans wished him a speedy recovery in the comments.

The year was 1992, and the day was July 12. Davey Allison and Red Farmer had plans to watch David Bonnett, son of fellow Alabama Gang member Neil Bonnett, in a practice session at Talladega. The two arrived by helicopter, but as Allison was landing it in the parking lot, he lost control, and things went south pretty fast.

“When things went crazy and the helicopter starting going out of control all this crazy stuff, I was still strapped in and I braced myself to the side of the dome and kind of holding on. But Davey was still flying the car, he was still trying to fly it, control it and he didn’t get to brace himself like I did,” Farmer said.

“I told them at the hospital when we got there that I was still in good shape. If we could take some of my good fortune and add it to Davey and take away some of his injuries and give me a few more, I’d be glad to trade it. He was like a second son to me since the day he was born,” he added.
