Alex Bowman wants to ditch his phone—Can you relate to needing a break from constant connectivity?

The NASCAR schedule is famous for being demanding and grueling, with a packed weekend slate that includes practice, travel, and racing. This certainly must result in a high-pressure cycle that repeats week in and week out. But there is good news for the drivers after the race this coming weekend. They are soon to enjoy a long break!

This time just like the previous time during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, NASCAR is taking a two-week long break between Brickyard 400 and Cook Out 400. Because most of the attention will be on the Olympics and also NBC will be broadcasting the summer Olympics, making the slot full.

While NASCAR may appear glamorous, with its high-profile drivers living seemingly extravagant lives, there’s more to the story. As the saying goes, “There are two sides to every coin.” While being a driver or team member comes with its perks, it also brings immense pressure to perform consistently and efficiently.

This demanding schedule often forces drivers to spend stretches of periods away from their loved ones, with some opting to bring their families along in motorhomes that offer limited convenience and comfort. Hence, the upcoming two-week Olympic break is a welcome respite for all. Recently, Alex Bowman, who ended an 80-race winless drought, shared his plans for the much-needed break, echoing the emotions of his on-track peers who are eagerly looking forward to some well-deserved rest and quality time with family.

Alex Bowman’s plan for the upcoming break is simple yet telling: “I think I am going to throw my phone in the lake.” While it might be a dramatic statement, the sentiment behind it is clear and hopefully not something that’d translate into reality! He plans to keep his cell switched off if not throw it away so that he can relax, spend some time off the track, spend quality time with friends, and not attend Zoom calls. Alex Bowman said, “Turn it off for sure. Spend some time with my friends, and disconnect a little bit.”

Have an interesting take?

Alex Bowman reasons how important this break is and what a good time it is. Bowman said, “I think it’s needed for the people. The crews of outs, the workload is insane. Two Sundays at home with kids is not enough a year. But happy that they are going to able to do that.”

Well, hopefully, the break will allow Alex Bowman to recharge and come back after the break refreshed and with the blessings of his family for the last stretch of races leading to the playoffs. Because just a win isn’t always enough and one could always have more cushioning to ensure a more comfortable place. Now the 2024 season will end a week later than it does normally and the season finale will be at Phoenix on Nov 10. But well, not everyone is off to go relax. Some are going to race even during the break—talk about resilience!

Daniel Suarez has had a busy year—from taking his exams for US citizenship to winning in Atlanta with one of the tightest finishes in Cup Series history, as Daniel Suárez edged out Ryan Blaney by just 0.003 seconds and Kyle Busch by a mere 0.007 seconds. He has definitely had a lot on his plate, but he has a lot more coming. Amidst all the drama and chaos of NASCAR, Suarez has something else that is catching his attention—his fiance!

Finally, after five years of dating and being together, he and Julia Piquet, daughter of F1 champion Nelson Piquet, will walk down the aisle and make it official. And they are doing it during the summer break, making full use of the time off. But he is taking a detour and also has other plans than having the post-marriage celebrations right after! The 32-year-old driver will be racing at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, also known as Interlagos, in São Paulo, Brazil. And he is excited about it. Plus, he even gave a good reason, he said, “Not only is this an opportunity to try something new, but with my fiancée’s family roots in Brazil, it gives me a chance to race in a place that she calls home.”

And well, Julia is actually a huge racing enthusiast, and she’s over the moon about the opportunity that’s come up. The two are excited plenty and have decided to extend their stay in Brazil even further!

While Suarez’s and Bowman’s plans are slightly different, they have one thing at the center: family. And we hope each driver gets to have fun as they like it with their loved ones during this break.
