During their conversation, Dale Jr asked Hank about the significance of his father in Hank’s life and what led to the deep bond they shared. Hank emphasized just how profoundly Dale Earnhardt had influenced his life. In the course of their discussion, Hank unveiled aspects of Dale Earnhardt’s personality that were previously unknown to most people.

Hank said, “I knew a lot about him that a lot of people never ever knew. And he was a cool guy, he was a cool cool guy. And he was different than what people perceive him to be because his reputation was so powerful and so big that you tend to overlook who the guy was within that uniform.”

Then Hank shared a story of their last trip, he said, “Last trip we made together, Donnie Reeves was with us in his diabetes, he’s a diabetic, his medicine was on the wing of that of your dad’s airplane in his Bible. And so I was getting into plane and he said ‘watch out don’t kick that, that’s precious’, I said what precious, the Bible or the medicine? And he looked at me and he said, ‘Both’.”

He recalled a moment when he sat with Dennis Fisher, the engine builder for Dale Earnhardt, and shared, “I’m sitting in a chair at dinner [with] Dennis Fisher and he said, ‘boy we miss our Buddy, don’t we?’ I said, ‘Dennis I can’t tell you how much I miss him.’ I had no idea the emotions that down inside of me how much I loved Dale Earnhardt and I said I miss him.”

“Dennis Fisher said, ‘Well, I want to put your mind to these, (…) I [Dennie] asked, ‘Dale what’s gonna happen to you if they scrape you up off the wall? Where are you going to spend eternity?’ And he [Dale] said, ‘Dennis I’m going to heaven, and he [Dennie] said, ‘Why in the world would you go to heaven, and he said, ‘Because I asked Jesus Christ to be my savior.”

Hank concluded, “And I believe that’s true and I believe Dale Earnhardt’s in heaven and I believe I’m going to sit around with him.”

In fact, Hank shared yet another remarkable story, leaving Dale Earnhardt Jr wishing he had been privy to these anecdotes much earlier.
