There is no doubt about the fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr’s NASCAR team has been extremely successful in the Xfinity Series. Housing able drivers like Sam Mayer and Justin Allgaier, the team has amassed three championships and 58 series victories. However, unlike Dale Jr, who has been wary of fielding a car in the Cup Series due to the costs involved, another Xfinity Series team owner launched a venture to expand his team.

It is BJ McLeod we are talking about. The Live Fast Racing owner sold off its #78 charter to Spire Motorsports at a whopping price of $40 million. Spire Motorsports, on the other hand, leased off their driver Zane Smith to drive the charter for Trackhouse Racing in the upcoming season. Smith will eventually join Trackhouse Racing, and that newly acquired charter will perhaps follow him to his new team.

Charters have become very expensive since their inception in 2016. There was a time when a charter was worth two or three million, but now they have shot up to as much as $40 million. Door Bumper Clear podcast host Casey Boat was curious about what was driving up the cost of these charters since its inception. Bubba Wallace‘s spotter, Freddie Kraft, also a DBC host, explained that it was almost like the stock market; you anticipate and you take the risk.

Brett Griffin revealed that Dale Earnhardt Jr had once denied paying such hefty chunks of money in lieu of a charter. However, after the Spire-Trackhouse deal, the JR Motorsports owner might be considering investing in one. Griffin said, “I bet he [Dale Earnhardt Jr] wished he would because ain’t a bad return, right?”

“Spire’s at the top of the market. If they’re paying drivers and they are paying spotters, and they are paying crew chiefs, they’re gonna have people, they’re gonna have talent. If they’re paying Hendrick Motorsports, make that up, an alliance fee, they’re gonna have to have faster cars,” he added, reflecting on Spire’s engine deal with Rick Hendrick’s team.

Spire Motorsports cars are not usually seen at the front of the pack. According to Bett Griffin, at least one of their cars has been running consistently at the back of the pack. For him, Spire’s recent venture was essentially to expand the prospects for their team and simultaneously, get rid of drivers that do not have a winning history.

Hence, a big investment might just elevate their game. It is safe to say that Spire Motorsports has single-handedly jumpstarted the market of charters.

Recently, a Frontstretch reporter got a chance to interview team owner Jeff Dickerson and asked him about his plans with his charters. He was curious if Dickerson would ever consider selling his charters off for the right price. Dickerson stated blatantly, “We’re not looking to sell, we’re looking to acquire. There’s nothing for sale here.”

Spire Motorsports has extended its contract with Corey LaJoie recently. And with Carson Hocevar making his Xfinity debut in the current season, the line-up for Spire Motorsports is one worth watching out for. According to Griffin, “That’s a pretty dang powerful opportunistic line-up.”
