“I’d Be 10 Times Better”: SVG Left Disappointed After NASCAR’s Shock Decision in Darlington

Kaulig Racing‘s Kiwi sensation, Shane Van Gisbergen, is unhappy with NASCAR’s decision before the Darlington Xfinity race. Last day, the rookie earned a ‘stripe’ on his Quad Lock-sponsored No. 97 Chevy Camaro. The aesthetic black and yellow combined car brushed against the wall throughout the 147-lap event. However, he displayed great at the later laps, finishing off in a much better position than expected after the mishaps.

SVG started at P17 and fell to P24 before rallying to finish at a considerable P15. The driver gained four spots during the final 16-lap stretch under the green flag, achieving this feat without any prior laps at Darlington. This was because both practice and qualifying sessions were canceled due to rain, and it is tough to cover a track like Darlington without previous experience.  Elaborating on the matter, the New Zealander expressed his thoughts to Speedcafe.

Shane Van Gisbergen described the importance of practice at such a tough track

SVG conveyed that he required some time to acclimate before the race. Although he fell back initially, he maintained his course, and as he grew more accustomed, his pace increased. Van Gisbergen admitted feeling apprehensive about running close to the wall, but he was confident about it. He further acknowledged the struggles with restarts, feeling restricted and unable to gain momentum at the initial moment.

SVG explained, “Just knowing how the tires fall off. Like, we were dropping three seconds a lap or something. The deg is crazy for only two corners, how much time you lose. It’s like ice skating. It’s a delicate balance and I just don’t know what I want from the car yet. And I wish I could start the race over. I’d be 10 times better at giving adjustments and understanding what I need.”

Keeping aside the difficulties, SVG noted how he was enjoying himself, praising the racing style and the track. Interestingly, Van Gisbergen also added that although the track feels very narrow when you’re out there, it still provides a lot of fun. The 35-year-old humorously remarked that he seemed to overtake Jeb Burton’s car numerous times. However, despite these challenges, he reflected on the race positively, noting the clean competition. Moreover, he affirmed that his car had more speed than his final position suggested.

Shane van Gisbergen honored Marcos Ambrose’s significant 2012 Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen International, showcasing the livery at Darlington. This design pays homage to Ambrose’s thrilling last-lap win in the #9 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion against Brad Keselowski. Sporting the iconic yellow and black colors, the livery commemorates Ambrose’s triumphs at Watkins Glen in both 2011 and 2012.

Now, Van Gisbergen is shifting his focus to the outing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He will probably drive a Cup Series race there as well, with fans hoping that he gets some practice there before the race commences.
