It was not his year! Kyle Larson wowed the crowd with a skillful mid-race maneuver, and his Hendrick Motorsports team’s quick final pit stop propelled him ahead. He narrowly edged out Christopher Bell at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway finish line, securing his spot as the first driver in NASCAR’s championship finale. However, the scene at Phoenix was markedly different. Larson’s usual aggression and voracity, so evident in Las Vegas, seemed subdued.
During his post-race interview, Larson echoed the sentiment of a subdued performance, expressing both disappointment in the day’s race and an optimistic outlook for future races. His candid reflection revealed a champion’s resilience, already looking ahead to the next challenge.

The race commenced with Larson demonstrating his tactical acumen, swiftly moving from fourth to third. His rivals, Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney, also shuffled for supremacy, with Bell surging from 13th to 11th and Blaney advancing to 14th. Larson momentarily dipped to fifth, but his determination shined in the second stage as he fought back to fourth place. Meanwhile, Bell’s hopes were dashed by a brake failure, and Larson briefly held seventh place until fortunes swung in his favor during lap 214.
Leading the way to pit road, Byron seemed in control, but it was Larson’s pit crew that stole the show with their rapid precision, propelling him past both Byron and Blaney. This critical juncture, a testament to impeccable coordination and timing, could have set Larson up for a championship title run. Yet, in spite of his crew’s flawless performance, victory remained elusive for Larson.
Reflecting on the race, Larson acknowledged, “Yeah, his car was really fast, really the last few months. And yeah, especially here today. So our pit crew and pit road just really kept us in the game. You know, we weren’t the greatest on the track, but I was just open for pit stops, you know, because I knew the way our team executed our lights and the way, you know, our pit crew can execute a fast pit stop. I knew that was going to be our only shot, really, to win. And they did everything, you know, in their power to give us the winning, you know, job done there.”
Conceding his position to Ryan Blaney and Ross Chastain, Larson added, “On that restart, Ross got a really good start from the second row and was hoping I could get clear a Denny and get to lead, and then you have Ross kind of protect for me, behind me, and I’m not sure if it would have made a difference really. I was just not as good as a few guys and especially Blaney and Ross, probably, so it would have been difficult, but my team did a really good job all season, so I’m extremely proud of them.”
In light of Ryan Blaney’s remarks, Larson also expressed gratitude for Blaney’s respectful conduct on the track, underscoring the sportsmanship between the competitors.

Reflecting on the season, Larson remarked, “We had an up and down year, and we finally put together two solid weeks in a row, so I don’t know if we’d done that all year, but just a huge thank you to hindercars.com, team Chevy, Valvoline, Junior Almond Bar, everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports, the engine shop, everyone. So, just we’ll come back next year and try to be stronger.”
