After wrecking out of the race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2020 and 2021, Kyle Busch has been struggling to regain his 2017 race-winning pace at Loudon’s Oval. And after ending in the P12 at NHMS last season, it seemed Busch would finally break free from his short-track curse. But that joy was short-lived. Although Rowdy’s shift to the Richard Childress Racing team awarded him massive success, the #8 Chevy also multiplied Kyle Busch’s short-track problems.

Struck by what can only be termed as bad luck, the 2023 Crayon 301 once again brought Kyle Busch to his knees, awarding the #8 RCR driver with his fourth DNF of the season. Sportsnaut’s Matt Weaver recently put out a tweet, revealing the insiders from the RCR #8 team’s pit box.

Has Kyle Busch’s bad luck followed him to Pit Lane?

The final round of the Crayon 301 qualifying stage witnessed Busch lose traction and spinning out, crashing into the SAFER barrier on the outside wall. Kyle Busch’s luck ran out again during stage one, when his #8 Chevy lost rear-wheel traction, causing him to slam sideways again into the outside wall. With smoke billowing from the right rear of his car, Rowdy pulled into Pit Road, expecting to get the damage fixed by the #8 RCR crew.

Momentarily rejoining the race for one lap, Kyle Busch was forced to pit as the damage to his #8 Chevy was termed ‘race-ending’ by the Richard Childress Racing crew.

Taking to Twitter, Matt Weaver revealed the post-wreck radio chatter between Kyle Busch and his crew chief Randall Burnett. Iterating how Busch was clearly told of the damage to his car, Matt Weaver wrote- “Go make a lap and let me see if I can come up with a plan for it.” Randall Burnett over the 8 radio “The upright is killed, the lower control arm is killed. Bring it back to me. Stop in the box. I think it’s fucked.”

Facing backlash from drivers for the Next Gen car’s poor performance on short tracks last season, NASCAR introduced a new short-track package for the 2023 season. Reducing downforce by 30%, the new short-track bundle included a shorter rear spoiler and some tweaks to the car’s underbelly. While the change was introduced to aid drivers in better handling, the new package only added to Kyle Busch’s short-track handicap.

Explaining how the short-track package had further increased his troubles, Rowdy said in the pre-race presser at New Hampshire, “This is a weekend where we come here, not planning on, but knowing that this has been our struggle. And so, it’s just the shorter spoiler, the less strakes on the diffuser. The less downforce has kind of just been our Achilles heel this year so far, so we’d love to come out of here and just have a solid run – learn and get better.”

NASCAR has now set out to implement a new short-track package, but as the changes won’t take effect until next season, all Rowdy can do is persevere.
