When Kyle Larson said, “I’m just at the point where I want to see the purse grow a lot. So, for the time being, and unless that happens, I won’t be running it this year,” all hopes of seeing him at the 2024 Chili Bowl Nationals was lost. But in an equally surprising move, the driver backtracked on his decision and announced a surprise return to the Golden Driller event. So, what could have been the reason that made him come back? Well, the man of the hour divulged details about his homecoming in a recent interview.

Kyle Larson unravels the rationale behind his Chili Bowl resurgence

“Maybe there’s a window right there to get there in time,” was precisely Larson’s mindset that pushed him to once again in the midget car racing arena that he spent half his life on. But that thought wasn’t out of the blue.

Unraveling how the idea of following the Chili Bowl road came to his mind, Larson, in a conversation with FloRacing, said, “I was just by myself, I went back to Arizona for a couple of days, and I was delivering all the Christmas stuff and storage units and just making trips back and forth. For me, I’m always thinking about racing, so yeah, I was thinking about that, and I was like ‘Man I can do this, I think I can make it work’.”

While delivering joy to everyone, the Christmas spirit surely ignited the prodigious racer spark that Kyle Larson has within. The 2x Chili Bowl winner wasted no time and connected to his former owner, Keith Kunz, hoping for another shot at the league.

Larson then disclosed anticipating Keith’s answer to be a ‘yes,’ and also shared why he thought so. “I waited for Monday night to get done and texted Keith in the morning and figured what his answer would be. I knew that they had extra cars there for race champion stuff. So, yeah glad it just worked out, or so far, it’s working out. And hopefully, the Thursday goes good and knocking the offense, finishing top 2 in the prelim night, be cool at trying, doing something different for the Chili Bowl.”

Larson’s main priority is to race the Late Models, but the concerning thing is the Hendrick Motorsports star’s 2024 season, which is way more hectic than NASCAR’s close to 40 race calendar.

How will Larson ensure his Late Model dream’s fruition?

Kyle Larson’s 2024 season is certainly not for the weak-minded. Having nearly 70 races in the upcoming season, which is close to double the NASCAR calendar, the 2024 season would surely be a cumbersome affair for him. To add to the already demanding roster, the #5 driver will also be attempting the Indianapolis 500 for Arrow McLaren and the Coca-Cola 600 for HMS, on the same day. Addressed as ‘Double Duty’, the event will see Larson attempt to 600 laps spanning over a 1000 miles on May 26.

However, his determination to stay with Chili Bowl is boundless, as is evident from his words when he talked about his priorities. Larson said, “My main priority is to be here so even if the timing doesn’t work out, I’m here to race the Late Model which is what I’ve committed to in the first place.”

Clearly, Larson doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and would probably be seen as much on the dirt tracks as the asphalts of the high-octane motorsport. Given his multitasking aptitude on different tracks across the roster, it’s very likely that 2024 is going to be an exciting chapter in the 2021 Cup Series Champion’s racing career.
