For a lot of the drivers racing in NASCAR-sanctioned competitions today, motorsports is all they have known for their whole lives. One such person is Cup Series driver Daniel Hemric. The 33-year-old has been in the sport for several years and if things had not worked out, he would be left pretty stranded in life. It turns out that apart from racing, the Kaulig Racing driver did not have any set path to what else he would have done with his life.

Hemric has only raced one full season in the Cup Series before this, which was with the legendary Richard Childress Racing. He cut his teeth and honed his craft in the Xfinity Series for several years before finally finding his way back to the premier competition of stock car racing in the world.

Daniel Hemric is not one to give up. He raced in the Cup in 2019 for RCR but lost his seat the following year. Thankfully, there were openings in teams racing in the Xfinity Series, and the 33-year-old made sure that he would not go unnoticed in NASCAR. Hemric raced for teams like JR Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Kaulig Racing in the competition.

His career’s greatest moment came in 2021 when he won the Xfinity Series championship with JGR in 2021. That’s all that was required to immortalize his name in stock car racing and make him one of the most sought-after drivers to race in the Cup Series. For now, his future is secure but had that not been the case, the 33-year-old might have been completely lost about what to do with his life.

“I never had a plan B but also somewhere in the back of my mind on the kind of days that it didn’t look like it would work out, I’m like, ‘Man, what am I going to do here? I might have to learn a trade, might have to go figure something out’,” he said in a video he uploaded on X. It was a part of a FOX feature of him promoting his Be The Change scholarship at Rowan-Cabarrus College.

Growing up in Kannapolis, racing has always been a big part of Hemric’s life. From a very young age, all he ever wanted to do was to race and win championships. Now at 33, he is proudly living his dream as a former NASCAR champion and a driver of one of the fairly competitive teams in the Cup Series.

His journey in the Cup Series began thanks to the great Richard Childress, who picked up on his skills after a couple of impressive years with RCR in the 2017 and 2018 Xfinity Series. Hemric finished P4 and P3 in those years and was recruited to the Cup team in 2019. Although his run only lasted for one season, it was like a dream come true for the 33-year-old.

“Growing up in Kannapolis, it was all about racing. I always dreamed of having the opportunity to drive for RCR and for Richard himself. Now, two iconic numbers, the 3 and the 8, are going to be under one roof. I know it makes Richard happier than anybody, just understanding what that means for the sport of NASCAR and how our fans are going to be able to connect with that,” he said as per Toby Christie.

It’s important to remember that Daniel Hemric has been a champion in NASCAR. He knows what it takes to win races and compete for titles. With Kaulig Racing, he might not make it to the championship 4 just yet, but it would not be a surprise if the driver of the #31 won the odd race out of nowhere.
