For a lot of racers competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, road courses seem to be a bit of an issue. The lack of competitive experience whenever there are right turns involved has often stumped even some of the most experienced racers and Bubba Wallace is no different. However, the 23XI Racing star wants to win the Cup Series and to improve his road course skills, he will make his IMSA debut in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Only on a couple of occasions has Bubba Wallace finished inside the top 10 when it comes to road courses. That kind of form does not help one win the Cup Series championship. Moreover, NASCAR isn’t all about oval racing anymore and they might add even more road courses in the future. So the drivers must know what those tracks are all about.

Ahead of his debut in the competition, Bubba Wallace spoke to reporter Marshall Pruett on the IMSA’s YouTube channel about his decision to take part in the Rolex 24. The 30-year-old candidly talked about his lack of form at road courses and that taking part in these races was to improve that aspect of his game.
“If you go look at my road course resume, nothing really to brag about. Got a couple of good finishes here and there but I found the thing that was most consistent with me was like my race craft. I found that I can go lay down a decent lap but when it comes to putting the whole field out there together, then I kind of would get in my own little shell and not really make much happen.”
“So I fired off a text to the Toyota leadership saying I need help. Whatever we can do to help my career get better on road courses, I need it,” he concluded.
Last season, the 23XI Racing star did his best so far in his Cup Series career. He made it into the playoffs for the first time and went as far as the round of 12. However, he never finished in the top 10 in a road course race. Compared to his teammate Tyler Reddick, Wallace was quite far behind in that aspect.
While he is looking to improve his craft, the 23XI Racing driver admitted to being stumped when he first heard of the IMSA race weekend schedule at Daytona. But it did not take him long to figure out that’s how NASCAR used to operate as well.

Ahead of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, there will be a race called the Roar Before the 24 which will serve as a precursor to the main event. This initially confused Wallace, who later figured out that it was a lot like the speed weeks NASCAR used to organize back in the day. He also admitted to feeling out of place with the fire suits and boots required for IMSA.
“Then this deal came around in the off-season and they were like, “What do you think? You wanna do it?” and I’m…no hesitation absolutely let’s do it. I didn’t know what to expect, we’re talking about running the Roar and I’m like, that sounds cool, then they’re like, ‘Then we’ll race next week’, I’m like wait…what’s the Roar? It’s just like speed weeks for us, how it used to be. So figuring out everything, I have never felt more out of place…just from the fire suit, their boot cut versus tucked in…so we’ the boot cut gang and we’re having a lot of fun,” the 23XI Racing star said.
